Ike Davis disturbed by nightlife reports and trade rumour as Terry Collins comes to his rescue-MLB
An unknown report claiming that the New York Mets are considering the trade of the first baseman Ike Davis due to his delayed reporting to the team during matches has disturbed him immensely. He has been discomforted by the news ever since it broke out as
is indicated by his vehement denial of it.
Davis maintains that it is an attempt to defame him and has nothing to do with the reality. Mets’ manager Terry Collins has also clarified that the team management had no issue with Davis throughout the season and that he has been as co-operative with the
coaching staff as any other player.
Ike started this season on a low and went through a series of hitless outings at the plate in the beginning. He was struggling to connect hits and was becoming a great cause of concern for the team management. At some point in time, his offensive slump reached
such a level which forced experts to believe that he may be sent to the Minor League by the team.
While his offensive numbers were declining, rumours were surfacing which said he will be asked to go through rigorous batting practices in the Minor League and return when he has worked out issues with the swings and the composure at the plate.
Against all the criticism coming off from the fans, Mets’ management kept faith in his ability and provided him at-bats.
Gradually Davis began improving and his trademark home-runs started unfolding from his bat. Then a situation came when he was among the few batters in the team on whom the whole side relied for posting runs on the scoreboard.
Since the beginning of the second half, his contributions have been stand out. Above all his home-runs have been of great significance for the team. On number of occasions he single-handedly stole the show from the opposition and brought wins for the Mets.
In light of the fact that Davis is an important part of the team’s offence, the rumour that he will be traded during the off-season appears strange.
Davis expresses his disappointment over the allegation regarding his nightlife and rifts with the management.
“It’s hard to answer questions when no one can say who it was or why they even said it,” Davis explained. “I don’t know if it’s a cheap shot. It’s falsely accused, I guess. But it just comes out of nowhere and it happens to athletes like this. A rumour,
or something said, and it’s blown out of proportion, so you really can’t do anything about it.”
Collins has supported the assertion of Davis and has stated that if there was ever a problem with him, he will not have played so many matches in the season.
It will be interesting to see whether the rumour turns out to be true or remains just a baseless accusation.
