Ike Davis’ grand slam reverberates in Citi Field as he improves for New York Mets – MLB Update
For an offence which lacks fire-power, watching first baseman Ike Davis sending the ball for a mammoth home run spells a great sign. The New York Mets are battling with a reality of injuries to their hitters. Just recently Jason Bay, one of their premier
hitters, sustained an injury, leaving the offence relying heavily on the third-baseman David Wright, for hits.
As soon as offence’s woes for Mets aggravate, Davis turns up as a bright spot and lends himself for filling the vacuum being left open with injuries. Since he has struggled throughout the season, one will be thinking that he has reached the stage now, from
where he will make amends for his poor outings.
Having a .196 batting average in the season explains his sub-par performance in the season. At some point in time, his failures disappointed the management to such an extent that options for replacements were started being considered.
However, the Mets’ manager Terry Collins held faith in him, despite all the criticism and believed that Davis will begin supplying valuable hits soon. Collins had elaborated that Davis is passing through a transient lean period and will not take much time
before finding consistency and becoming a linchpin of the offence.
By the time team’s offence was being shaky, Collins stated that he walked up to various managers, seeking suggestions. He described the fear Davis imposes on opponents in-spite of putting up series of unimpressive shows and how big a threat he is considered
by the managers.
“I talked to two managers in the last two series and they asked about Ike,” Collins said, “And one of the things they brought up is: ‘He still scares us to death when he comes to the plate’ and they know he’s hitting .165. When he gets it going, he’s dangerous,
and right now he’s getting it going. When you get the hit to win a game, it’s got to lift your confidence.”
Indeed, when Davis performs at his potential, he is hard to stop even by the quality hurlers. Therefore, the Mets will be hoping that the grand slam he struck in the last game will announce an incoming of many of those in the games to come.
