Iker Casillas: Real Madrid ready to build on Champions League win
Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas today said that his team are ready to build on their 2-0 win over Ajax in their opening UEFA Champions League group stage match.
The club captain is confident that Madrid can use their display in Europe’s elite club competition as a platform from which they can build a silverware-laden season. The score did not reflect the sheer dominance of Los Blancos, who had more than 30 shots
on goal during the match.
2010 FIFA World Cup winner Casillas told his club’s official website today that: “This is a new season in the Champions League and we had to start off well just like we did. We laid the foundation to build on. We had a lot of chances on goal. The team played
fantastic. We are gelled and we are training hard. We played more as a team today. I think we're on the right track. We are improving slowly but surely. The best opponent in each of our last three matches has been the goalkeeper, which really says a lot.”
Mourinho brought in
Madrid were subject to an overhaul this summer after failing to win any trophies last season. The club brought in Jose Mourinho, who won three trophies including the Champions League at Inter Milan last term, to lead the charge. They have recruited the likes
of Germany’s World Cup stars Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira as well as Ricardo Carvalho, Angel di Maria and several others.
Those players have been added to a squad which features global superstars such as Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite (‘Kaka’) and Cristiano Ronaldo, and Casillas added that he was delighted the team had finally settled after the summer shake-up.
He said that: "It is a privilege to play for Real Madrid. I think stability makes this team more confident and translates into team success."
