Iker Casillas believes Real Madrid will catch up to Barcelona
Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has declared that his team are due to catch up to Pep Guardiola's magnificanet Barcelona team.
Real are without a trophy since 2008, when Bernd Schuster led the team to victory in La Liga.
Barcelona, on the other hand, have finished top of the league in the last two seasons, during which the Catalans have also won the Champions League and the Copa del Rey.
Casillas, who captains his club and the Spanish national team, has won four league titles for Real since joining the senior team in 1999.
With six games played in the league, Jose Mourinho's team are third with 14 points, one ahead of Barcelona, and the Spanish international has backed his team to match Barcelona's current form—if not this season, then in the next.
"We are able to stand up to them," the 29-year-old was quoted as saying by Spanish daily Marca. "We compare favorably with them and we are only a couple of months, perhaps a season away from them. This is the best Barca in history and they have been the fashion
but this is just a passing fad."
Backs Mourinho during first season in charge
Real have won their two opening Champions League fixtures, while Barcelona were held to a 1–1 draw away to Russian side Rubin Kazan at the end of September.
With Mourinho in charge, Casillas' team are bound to make a strong bid in Europe, with the Portuguese having won the Champions League for FC Porto and Inter Milan in the last six years. The Real captain backed his new manager to win trophies at the club.
"He gives us a very important addition. He is the ideal coach for his character and the way he expresses himself to the players. I think it will succeed at Real Madrid."
Real travel to face Malaga on Saturday before hosting AC Milan in a thrilling Champions League fixture on Tuesday.
