Iker Casillas says that it would take some time for the Spanish team to realize what they have accomplished
The Spanish skipper and goal keeper Iker Casillas has told that it will take some time for his team mates to realize the magnitude and gravity of the achievement they have accomplished. He stated that after he lifted the World Cup Trophy in South Africa, Johannesburg at the Soccer City Stadium when the defeated Netherland 1-0.
The final on Sunday saw an extremely intense game between the two teams and late in the second half of extra time, when the match was just about to head for penalties. The pass from Arsenal’s captain Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona’s Anders Iniesta was the reason that broke Spain’s curse of being under achievers.
Now they walk triumphant as the victors of the world two years after they conquered the European territory in European Championship. The Spanish coach Vicente del Bosque has expressed his current team as the “fantastic generation”, one that will lead the future of Spain into more victories.
The Real Madrid shot stopper Casillas implied the significance of the event stating, “It's a historic moment for Spanish football. This achievement is something that we, the players, are still not aware of, what the significance really is. I think it's something we will only realise over time”.
Casillas performed extraordinarily in the World Cup and in the end was also awarded with the Golden Glove awarded. The 29 year old captain of Real has 111 caps for Spain, made tow tantalizingly superb saves of Arjen Robben in the match to keep Spain out of trouble and initiate the “Reign of Spain”.
The humble goal keeper refused to share all the glory and the importance for his saves implying that it was the team effort that lead to the victory. He mentioned, “I'm not a saint, not at all. I have a lot of experience after putting in a lot. I have been gifted and have had lots of support from all my family and friends, so I am really overjoyed today”.
He claimed that since their victory in Euro 2008 he knew that the La Furia Roja were heading for big things and they had proved that now. He expressed that it was amazing to have the feeling of the World Champions. Spain has never won a quarter final before. Although they came fourth in a previous World Cup but that only happened because there were no quarter finals in that event.
Casillas told they had made history, “It's what we have dreamt of since we were children. It is truly a special time and certainly a much happier moment than when we won the European championships. We are now the world champions”.
He told that the task of winning was not easy but they had managed that with some favours from lady luck but didn’t undermine the fact that the team deserved the victory. He told that the nearly fifty days of World Cup football were very hard but fun at the same time. It was moment that was worth living for.
The Netherlands defensive midfielder Nigel de Jong told that he thought actually felt that his team were a bit deficient in the area of combining skill with expertise. Also that the ratio of skill the Spanish possessed was astounding.
The player from Manchester City told that it was a close game for both teams and that fact was shown on the scoreboard too. In the end Spain got lucky due to a bad decision and a moment of confusion by the Dutch.
He also admitted that the Orange had not been the opportunist and to win against Spain that was a big mistake, “We both created some very good chances and both knew that if they'd score first then they would win the game. So I think it was really balanced. Spain really have a good team, but so do we. As I said we created a lot of chances and you have to take your chances, that's all”.
