Ilewin Tom looks favourite for 32red Handicap Chase – Huntingdon Preview
Ilewin Tom leads his nine competitors, both in terms of talent and experience, on Huntingdon card for today’s (March 14) high-status race of 32red Handicap Chase.
The Gary Brown-trained bay gelding is geared up to confidently take on Sawago, Molko Jack, Musical Wedge, Pete The Feat, Howryagettinon, Civil Servant, Sycho Fred, Rivermouth and Phoenix Des Mottes.
The Class 5 contest with £1,949 of prize money is scheduled to be held at 2:55 (GMT) on 3m Good To Soft track.
Ilewin Tom is leading the market ahead of the mega event. The reason behind his being the hot favourite is three outstanding performances the dashing horse delivered in his last three outings during February-April 2011.
Following a fabulous victory on February 1, 2011, the nine-year-old talented runner went on to finish second in his second last start during the same month.
The Tom Segrue-owned gelding again finished first in his last outing on April 9. This excellent success streak proved to be a big morale booster for him.
However, Brown decided not to launch his veteran pupil in any other race for at least a year, and put him in school to polish his capabilities further.
Now, the 19-race maverick horse is making a comeback today. A lot of hopes are hinged with him and he is carrying the burden of high expectations---both from the bookies and his trainer.
If Ilewin Tom manages to read the running condition well, he will be able to add another glaring victory to his career chart today.
Out of his competitors, Sycho Fred and Sawago seem to be tough enough. This duo can threaten Ilewin Tom’s favourite position.
Sycho Fred has been performing elegantly since last few months. Followed by a decent victory on December 22, 2011, the Mike Sowersby-trained bay gelding finished second in another race during the same month.
The veteran runner went on to finish fourth and sixth in his two subsequent races during January 2012. He again clinched top spot in his last outing on March 11.
On the other hand, Sawago finished second in a race on December 26, 2011, and went on to bag a big victory during the same month. Kevin Morgan’s gelding notched up second and third spots in his last two outings in the month of January 2012.
In this situation, both these horses are likely to fight hard against Ilewin Tom who will have to face a very tough challenge before tasting success. Let us see how Brown’s gelding manages to keep his head high in the midst of tempestuous waters. Good luck
to him.
