  1. Here are some rules that I had saved to my Flash drive but I didn't save the websites name unfortunately but I assure you they are legitimate. Some of these are understandable and some are kind of off-beat like why a backrow player can't run up to help a block or how you can't hit a ball if it is set from the back from the libero. The error/illegal move you mentioned about blocking the serve is on here also as the last one. Also, someone mentioned above, I've always found this to be an interesting rule but if one of your teammates shank the ball between the antenna and the pole (which is considered out for the other team), a player from the same side that hit the ball out that way (if they can make it there that fast) can run to the other side and bump, set, or hit the ball in some way back to their side as long as it passes back through the antenna and pole and not back over the net or outside the Ref's stand (which is very difficult). Enjoy :]

Errors, Faults, and Illegal Moves of Volleyball:

*The ball lands out of the court, in the same court as the team that touched it last, under the net to the opposing team's court, or the ball touches the net "antennas". The ball also may not pass over or outside the antennas even if it lands in the opponents' court.

*The ball is touched more than three times before being returned to the other team's court.

*The same player touches the ball twice in succession.

*A player "lifts" or "carries" the ball (the ball remains in contact with the player's body for too long).

*A player touches the net with any part of his or her body or clothing while making a play on the ball (with the exception of the hair).

*The players of one team do not manage to touch the ball before the ball lands in their half of the court.

*A back-row player spikes the ball while it is completely above the top of the net, unless he or she jumped from behind the attack line (the player is however allowed to land in front of the attack line).

*A back-row player participates in a completed block of the opposing team's attack (completed means at least one blocker touched the ball).

*The  libero , a defensive specialist who can only play in the back row, attempts a block or makes an "attacking hit", defined as any shot struck while the ball is entirely above the top of the net.

*A player completes an attack hit from higher than the top of the net when the ball is coming from an overhand finger pass (set) by a libero in the front zone.

*A player is not in the correct position at the moment of serve, or serves out of turn. This type of foul is related to the position currently occupied by the players. When ball is served, players can place themselves freely on the field (e.g. a "back-row" player can be close to the net) so long as they obey the following rules: The area "1" player must be behind the area "2" player and to the right of the area "6" player. The area "6" player must be behind area "3" player, to the left of area "1" player and to the right of area "5". The area "5" player must be behind the area "4" player and to the left of the area "6" player. Symmetric rules must be respected by the front-row players (those in areas "2", "3" and "4").

*When hitting, a player makes contact with the ball in the space above the opponent's court (in blocking an attack hit, this is allowed).

*A player touches the opponent's court with any part of his or her body except the feet or hands.

*When serving, a player steps on the court or the end line before making contact with the ball.

*A player takes more than 8 seconds to serve.

*At the moment of serve, one or more players jump, raise their arms or stand together at the net in an attempt to block the sight of the ball from the opponent.

*A player blocks the serve, or attacks the serve when the ball is in the front zone and above the top of the net.

  2. A new rule implemented around 1990 specified that receiving team cannot *attack* a serve, which means you cannot block a serve, and cannot jump and swing on the serve to send the ball back to the serving side.

Some refs interpreted the rule as... if a receiver bumps the ball *up* and back to the serving side, it is okay; if the receiver hits the ball at a level above his/her forehead and "forced" the ball to go back to the serving side, it is a foul. It could be a little more flexible to back-row actions, but sometimes you can argue that any action is an attack if the ball goes back directly.

Usually good teams tend to do three-hits and leagues want to see more rally.

  3. yess...it is very illegal

but you also cant lift the ball up and when you are setting you have to use even hands or you will be called on a two-step hit

  4. blocking a serve usually isnt allowed. here r other illegal hits:

lifts-guys usually hit like this. its where u kinda 'lift' the ball up

trying 2 block a hit thats coming @ ur face-either u set it or jump up and bump it. u cant push it away

hitting it twice, um----thats all i can think of now (its been a long summer)

  5. the answer to ur question is that u cannot make contact above the plane of the net on the serve. a weird rule is called pursuit. That means that ur team hit the ball on the serve and it goes outside the antenna out of bounds. ur team can run over as long as u r out of bounds and not hit the netand send it over outside of the antenna for the second hit that way u can keep the ball alive.

also a funky hit is if u r playing the ball with one arm a lot of times an official will call u for a carry if u aren't using a fist.

  6. ya, you cant block a serve, you also cant jump when you hit/attack a ball from the back row, wheather you are a front or back row player, both feet have to be on the ground. Theres lots more rules too, you should check out an official rulebook.

  7. Yes that is illegal.

  8. You can't block a serve.  A weird legal hit is that you can blocka hit and then play the next contact yourself as a block is not considered one of your three contacts.

  9. That is true, Ive done that like 3 times in a row during a game when i was younger. You also cant carry the ball, or when you go to block the ball you cant junp over the net. If your hands reach up,over and across the net without hitting the net, thats illegal.
