  1. Our schools are hugely over crowded. Teachers are having to do more for less pay. Our kids are suffering the consequences of having schools that can't afford the numbers that they are having to accommodate. I think if a person wants to be a U.S. citizen, then they should do it legally. I also think that just because the child of an illegal alien is born in the U.S, doesn't mean they (the family) should be allowed to stay in this country. I think that, like other countries, the child should be able to claim their U.S. citizenship at 18 years old...unless the parent is able to legally immigrated, then the child should be accepted with open arms.

  3. But a major annoyance to people is when immigrants don't pay their own way by getting a job and everything so their children learn english better and get better qualifications if they attend school instead of getting stuck in a rubbish job or unemployed.

Illegal immigrants shouldn't be in public schools anyway, but I don't know how it works there.

  4. It that a question or a rant?

To give the benefit of the doubt.  I'll answer that no, I think they should be allowed to attend public school in the US.

"Give us your poor, your tired, your huddled masses longing to be free... "

    :D

  5. Sounds to me like you'd be doing them a massive favour.

  6. Why should a child do the time of their parents crime? We can educate them to be better than their parents.

  7. I agree with Janis!  Why shouldn't we educate a child who wants to learn?

  8. well yeah. taxpayers can barely afford to keep their own kids in school.

  9. Ummmm.... Illegal immigrants should not even be in our country anyway, so this only makes sense.  BUT, when do politicians do much of anything that makes sense?

  10. Since they must sign up for school to attend, the schools should have to check the ID database just like businesses are beginning to be required to do.  If they are not here legally, then report them to ICE and have them deported.

  11. They are allowed in the school where I work.  That's the reason I always raise my eyebrows when someone who has been homeschooled thinks that they will not be accepted into the public school system if something happens where they can no longer homeschool.

I have no problem with illegal immigrants attending school.

I think it is a better use of tax payer money to educate a person who wants to learn than to waste our money on children who are  at school with no desire to learn.

  12. Think about what you just said-- you are not talking about someone who had any choice in this matter, they are children. These children did not come here by themselves- they did not do anything wrong. If we must punish illegal immigrants then let us do it in a fair way.

  13. It's not like they came here for the public education as it is. Why do they need access to our system when they don't contribute to it. We don't use the system and we are citizens.

I think the public system shouldn't be used for any child until they figure out how to stop all the bs testing and start teaching our kids to learn again. I think children deserve better than that.

But to allow illegal immigrants access to our schools takes money away from education for the children who belong there. Maybe if we take away the public system, food stamps, welfare, and medical care from these people then maybe they'll quit coming.

  14. I've got to say I agree - public schools in America are something that are paid for by citizens, through taxes.  They are available to all citizens because they are paid for by citizens.  If you don't pay taxes because you're here illegally, then IMO you shouldn't have access to the things that taxes provide.

I pay thousands per year in property taxes, and over 80% of those taxes go to schools that my son will never attend.  I'm ok with that because I know that those schools do benefit other kids in our area.  However, illegal immigrants are streaming into our area by the thousands, not paying taxes (since they're not citizens), and taking advantage of rights like public schools, free public health, and government assistance.  Yep, you'd think that schools and other agencies would check for citizenship (especially when the adults don't speak English), but the truth is that they don't have the time to do so.

We have 90% of a large Mexican village in our city - an illegal immigrant even boasted in our newspaper about how nearly everyone in the surrounding area comes up here illegally after age 14.  Our schools are overcrowded, our roads are in desperate need of repair, jobs are difficult to find (because hiring citizens requires things like normal wages and workers comp), and traffic accidents are all too common.  No, I can't say that I support illegal aliens being able to use public services that are paid for by taxes.  I don't have a problem with them coming to the US - we're a nation of immigrants - but for crying out loud, do it legally.

Edit - I do agree with what Janis says, though.  If an illegal immigrant truly wants to learn, I would have an easier time letting them into a school than a citizen who doesn't give a rip.  But honestly, too many illegal families around here don't see a point in advancing - they think it's good enough to stay where they are and live off others.  For the ones that truly want to work, to get ahead, I say let them.

  15. I'm not sure this is a homeschooling question, but I am going to give you a Christian Homeschooling answer.

In the old testament God addressed the issue of immigration in Lev 19.34

But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.

The Lord doesn't change.  He is the Lord that changeth not.  What he said to the Hebrew children addressed the issue of how to treat "strangers in the land".  Immigrants, legal or illegal, should have the right to public education if anyone born here has it.  That's God's way.  And He is smarter than me or any one else.
