Illegal to have Savannah Cats?

i wanted to get one but I found out they are illegal in my state. I'd like to know why it's illegal to have one but you can have pittbulls, rottwhilers, and all those other big dogs that can kill people. In my opinion those kind of dogs are just as wild.

  1. I have two and they are AMAZING.  More friendly and more social than domestic cats.  I love them more than anything!!!!!!  They were 2000 each but sooooo worth it.  And they love my domestic cats that have all come from shelters...

  2. I can't believe how many ignorant and just plain dumb replies there are to this question.

guest7248 uses a cross between a domestic house cat and a Leopard as an example! How absurd! Why not an Elephant for all the relevance it makes.

Savannah cats are a cross between a domestic cat and an African Serval. Not a Leopard. Servals are medium sized cats, incapable of killing a human and often kept as pets themselves, although be ready for a lot of work with one from what I've been told.
Savannahs do not inherit all sorts of wild killer traits. I have one and he's chillin in his chair right now.
They are larger than normal house cats but not THAT large. Plus each generation away from the Serval parent get's closer to the size of a house cat.

Guest9325 states "You can't own one because it is illegal to have wild animals as pets."

Not true. For one thing you CAN own wild animals as pets in some states but more inportantly, the US Dept of fish and wildlife considers any cross between a wild cat and a domestic cat to be domestic. So they aren't considered "wild animals". The only place I've heard of where it is illegal to own a Savannah, until f5 or f6 generation, is New York City. Most likely due to complete ignorance about the breed.
