Illya Marchenko defeats Frederico Gil 6-1, 6-3
Ukraine’s Illya Marchenko, ranked 106th in the world, cruised past world number 73 Frederico Gil of Portugal in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 in the first round of AEGON International at Devonshire Park in Eastbourne on Tuesday.
The Ukrainian took just 59 minutes to beat his opponent in a one sided clash.
Marchenko was almost flawless in the first set as he allowed his opponent to win just a single game, claiming the set 6-1. The Ukrainian hit two aces and 58 percent of the first deliveries, clinching 73 percent of the points on
them in the first set. The right-handed did not lose even a single point on the second serve in the opening set. The Donetsk resident converted both break points he received on Gil’s serve in the first set.
The Ukrainian broke Gil in the third game of the second set and held his serve in the next game to take a 3-1 lead. Marchenko broke the Portuguese again in the ninth game, winning the set 6-3. The six feet and one inch tall fired
four aces and 68 percent of the first serves, claiming the same percentage of points on them in the second set. The 23-year-old saved all the three break points he faced and capitalised on two of the four break point opportunities he created on Gil’s serve
in the second set.
Marchenko will meet world number 71 Igor Kunitsyn of Russia in the second round.
Donald Young beats Daniel Cox 6-1, 7-5
World number 123 Donald Young of USA defeated British Daniel Cox, ranked 272nd in the world, in straight sets 6-1, 7-5 to move to the second round. The match lasted for just an hour and eleven minutes.
The American thrashed his opponent in the opening set, dropping just two games and breaking the Brit a couple of times to win the set 6-1. Young delivered three aces and a whopping 88 percent of the first serves, converting 76
percent of them into points in the opening set. The left-handed won two of the six break points he received on Cox’ serve in the first set.
Unlike the opening set, Young faced stiff resistance from his opponent in the second set. The American and Cox held their serve in the first ten games to equalise the score at 5-5. Young broke the British in the eleventh game and
served out the set in the next game, winning it 7-5. The 21-year-old converted one of the two break points he received on the Brit’s serve in the second set.
Young will face world number 51 Andreas Seppi of Italy in the second round. The Italian defeated Tobias Kamke of Germany in three sets 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the first round.
