  1. most people say wood is better it supposedly gives it more power however ive talked to people who say it is not as strong as fibreglass but it mostly depends on your prefrence

    fibreglass is also cheaper

what worries me though is what you are really going to use it for if you were telling the truth you would have realized you could just ask someone at the store and that would be easier but yet you decided to come ask on here which means 1. you are not getting it from a store and 2. you are hideing it from your parents.

so therefore im geussing you are getting it from a friend

ummmm you know thats illegal right??

  2. Buy the El-cheepO first 1 until you decide it's what you want to do.2 you will out grow it in a year or less. I have 11 Bows from long Bows too Compound Bows I mostly Hunt every thing from squirrel too Brown Bear on Kodiak Island Note: most Brown Bears start around 400lb and up. It is a wonderful and full filling sport.work out on arm curls and a good rubber ball squeeze it.remember if you use a sight pin when you shoot the arrow and miss move the pin towards the arrow. Follow the arrow it will bring you on target. PS have you looked at Craig's list sort of like adds in paper but better type in craigslist on your browser then your state then city close by then look at all the choices I have bought 5 Bows off of Craigslist and paid a fraction of the normal cost. Luck  PS get parents involved.

  3. a recurve is a traditional bow. so in holding true to it's genre, i think you should go with the wood. a handcrafted bow is something you can be very proud of. the art of bowmanship is a sacred and personal journey. it should be treated as such.

  4. I would go with the wood one simply because I like the looks of them better. I havent shot a recurve in years, but ast the first poster said, if they are available where you are, consider a compound. At 13 I woulda been lucky to be able to pull and hold a hunting weight recurve let alone a compound. It is easier to hold the compound after you get it pulled back and wil help you with accuracy. If you are set on the traditional bow though definately wood.

  5. Getting a bow from a friend is not illegal.  As the first poster said, fiberglass is much easier to make than wood.  Mass production also means less quality control.  While they're fine for beginners, I wouldn't use them for my classes.  There are certain things you need to change if you want the most out of fiberglass bows.  First thing is get a decent dacron string.  A decent string can make a huge impact on the bow's consistency.  Most fiberglass bow I've seen comes with what looks like nylon string, with no nocking point.  Nocking point will also make a huge impact on accuracy.  Both the dacron string and nocking point can be had for as little as $10 total.  Then if you want you can stick a paper clip on the bow for a makeshift sight.

  6. Get the fibreglass bow - they're cheaper because they are easier to mass-produce, and they don't have that pretty woodgrain pattern.

For a first bow you don't want to spend an inordinate amount of money, just what you need for what you're hunting, so you can learn the craft.

Have you thought about a compound bow? It makes it easier for a younger guy such as yourself to pull and hold a higher poundage, important if you want to go after bigger game like deer.
