I'd advise that you trim the hair rather than shave only because shaving will cause razor bumps that result in itchiness and irritation. If you trim it down as low as you can and keep it neat, you'll be fine. Hope this helps.

It's all about personal preference.  Since you've never done this before, if you decide to do it, just stick to trimming.  At some later time you may decide to try shaving, but that brings some potential problems and pain/irritation until you get used to it.  Either leave it alone or just trim it.
