Question:

Im 15, usually shoot 40-44 on 9 holes, would a stiff flex or regular flex be better for my driver?

I ordered a new driver stiff flex and I'm wondering if I made a mistake and should return it and get a regular shaft? Thanks

  1. It depends on your swing speed.  Typically if you are strong in your upper body, they say you should use a stiff shaft.

  2. Shooting a score doesn't really necessarily tell you what flex of shaft you need, nor age or height, or weight. Yes it all takes into affect, but the major "telling factor" is your swing speed. If you go into a Golf store alot of them have a hitting area where you can get this measured or tested. If i can shoot constantly under 37 & have the same swing speed, same age, height etc. that doesn't necessarily mean i should get a stronger shaft. But say i have all the same things as you (height, age & weight) & shoot the same as you, BUT i swing 2x as fast, im prolly going to have a different shaft than you. Below is a site i quickly found. GOOD LUCK!

  3. You will probably be OK with the stiff.  There isn't that much difference in the amount of flex, but if you find you can't flex it (and the ball keeps going right because your clubface is open) you can alway get it re-shafted or trade it back for a regular flex.

  4. First and foremost, go to a club fitter who has a swing speed indicator and find out your swing speed and launch angle for your club.  This will help determine what shaft you should be using.

  5. stiff excpecially if ure 15 im 15 but i shoot even or lower so i use xstiff but then agian im 6'5 240

  6. If you swing the club faster than 85 but less than 110 mph, consider the stiff shaft.  Less than 85 but more than 75- go with Regular flex.

  7. Age and ability have little to do with shaft selection.  Typically though the better you are the faster you swing which would warrant a stiff shaft.  You need to swing in excess of 110 to need a xstiff shaft, which is next to a miracle for a 15 year.  I am 25, swing around 109-111 and use a stiff, mid kick, low launch shaft, which I was custom fit for, which is what you need to do.  If you shoot 36 on 9 and you swing at 70 mph, no need for a stiff shaft.  Go to you local pro shop, get fitted and go from there.  Go to wherever you bought the driver and if they can get you properly fitted, if not get fit somewhere else and return the driver if its not the right one for you!

  8. I'm 14 and hit 38 to 40.  We are young so we don't need the whip of a regular flex. I'd say stiff is the way to be.

  9. I second the motion, It is swing speed that determines the type of shaft that you will need.

Bare in mind that there are a lot of characteristic to a shaft.  Just because it is stiff and you swing 110, doesn't mean the shaft is for you.  Kick points, launch angle, tempo, etc. are all factored in to determine the best "stiff" shaft for you.  If you really want to know which shaft is for you, get fitted....

  10. Hi there.

My advice to you? Go to your local pro or golf shop and ask those guys. We don't know how fast you swing, what your height and built is. So we cannot really give you this kind of advice.

    Good luck.

  11. it all depends on your swing speed.  stiff flex is good for speeds from low 90s to 120 mph

  12. with those scores you probably have a d**n fast swing go with a stiff. im bout the same age and ability and my reg. shafted driver caused my ball to balloon and slice way too much. i switched to a hibore w/ a stiff shaft and im consistently 250 and in the fairway. btw my swing speed is 105

  13. yes swing speed but also control more flex will help with distance but less control

less flex less distance and more control
