  2. move ur legs and ur arms in  circle motion= treading water

kick ur legs and make big circles with your arms- free style

  3. I definitely think it is great that you want to learn how to swim. My advices include just hopping in and giving it a go - firstly determine how well you can float. Lay on your back in the pool (stay in the shallow end so you can put your feet back on the ground when you need to) and you will find that it will come naturally to move your arms etc to keep yourself afloat. Also, practise your kicking while holding on to the edge of the pool - just lay on your belly while holding on and move your feet up and down. Again, this should come naturally as a result of trying to keep your body afloat. I also recommend using kickboards, flippers etc to held build strength and to aid in floatation until you feel confident. Breastroke (i.e. froggie style) is probably the easiest way to learn too - basically you just make big circles with your arms and legs and putting your head under is optional. Hope this helps - good luck!

  4. If you're not afraid to actually get in the water and fool around then try something like this :

Grab on to the side of the pool, hold and kick with your feet. Every couple seconds let go of the ledge and begin to wave your hands back and forth, or up and down. Try not to be afraid of letting go, this should be done in the shallow end as you can't drown or hurt yourself.

That's exactly how i learned, it took a couple days of doing it but i eventually learned how to keep myself above the water, from there you just work on strengthening your swim techniques.

  5. If you live in a city,( or close to one ) that has a YMCA, they generally have swimming classes, at little or no cost. The only other suggestion I have is to ask a relative or friend that you trust, to help you learn. Everyone should learn to swim. It could save your life someday.

  6. ask a friend or family member! ( that knows how to swim )

or just stay in the shallow end. where you can stand.

  7. Learning to swim is a great idea.  Being confident in the water will increase your safety and open up a whole world of aquatic recreation opportunities.

People do teach themselves to swim.  One of the best things to do is simply watch other people swim.  See what they do that works and try and imitate it yourself.  It will help a lot if you have a swim-buddy who can help you out.

Its pretty economical to get lessons though, and that is certainly the best way to do it.  Call your local chapter of the American Red Cross or YMCA and see what they might suggest.  Some places offer very inexpensive or even free classes.  Also try local Parks & Recreation departments and Community Colleges.  Where I live the "Junior College" offers very inexpensive adult swim classes.

Good luck.  Whichever you chose, keep at it.  Learning to Swim is really worthwhile!
