I'm 16, 5'2, and I'm overweight. i weigh about 170. i wanted to do muaythai since i was little but i never asked my parents. I've always loved muaythai and kickboxing and i would love to do it to loose weight but am i too overweight to do these?

if im not too overweight to do these i also wanted to know what i would need to be prepared for these classes.i also wanted to know if anyone knows any good places to take muaythai classes and kickboxing classes in north hollywood, burbank, or northridge in california. i can speak thai so if they dont speak english much there thats not a big issue.

  1. You ought too.  It'll take you as much time to learn the techniques as it will for you to lose the weight if you want to do it competitively.  You are in the haven of martial arts gym central, so finding a club won't be hard at all.  You could even travel down to Beverly Hills and train with Bas Rutten.  Price might be an issue.

They're both good sports, but they're two separate and distinct sports.  Once you've been around martial arts for awhile you'll realize that it's like the difference between a Harley and a Kawasaki.  Both are motorcycles, but to a rider they are completely different.  Try both and pick the one you like the most.

  2. i think u should take muay thai, its gonna be a fun and challenging experience 4 u. im did jiu-jitsu forabout 3 yrs and now im taking muay thai. its really gonnakeep u in shape and help you. and besides mma seems to be the big thing no so y not give it a try. my parents still arent happy with my mma obssession but its deff worth it,

  3. why not ?. I took kick-boxing but had to stop because I had twisted my ankle... but if you really wanna do it I say go for it !. but you have to be commited . its hard work...

if you do decide to kick-box your gonna lose A LOT ! of weight.... trust mee.

(thanks for your answer on my question:] )

    hope I helped !.

  4. There is no such thing as not being able to do a art. It's like being racist, you can't do this because your colored, you cant do that because your white. Don't fall into that stuff, there are many overweight kick boxers and they do great, and while you're at it your gonna be losing a lot of weight, Kick boxing and Muay Thai are hard core on conditioning because you move around so much and you have to rotate your 8 limbs because you're moving them all, so you'll be having a full body workout, whereas sports like boxing don't need to much lower body strength but a lot of upper body conditioning.

  5. no your never to over wieght. and muay thai and kickboxing is the best exercise. i would also try jujitsu. im 16 and im training to be an mma fighter so your not to young either. i do kickboxing and jujitsu. a good gym for muay thai by you is, Muay Thai Academy of America Ink. heres its information:

    Neighborhood: North Hollywood

    11024 Vanowen St

    North Hollywood, CA 91605

    (818) 760-3880

but deffinatly try it. its fun and good for you!

  6. Muay Thai and Kickboxing are awesome work outs. If  you are willing to stick out the pain and soreness you will be in much better shape in just a month or two. Being over weight should be a good reason to start not shy away from sports :) What you will need to be prepared varies form school to school. They may have gloves, shin pads, hand wraps and head gear, but I suggest you buy your own, eventually. You will need a mouth piece, cup, training close, and a willingness to get the c**p kicked out of you for a while.

here is a link to one Muay Thai school in Burbank

check your phone book under martial arts to find more or use yahoo or google.

  7. just go

  8. Angel, I weighed 310 lbs in the 5th grade. I know what it's like. And I also remember how I thought "I've got to get in shape for this or loose weight for that." What you need is a good teacher who cares. You may not be able to dive straight into the hardcore workouts but a good teacher will know how best to get you started. If nothing else, get a punching bag and a few books or videos and try it at home until you feel comfortable with it.  I would stay away from the MMA/meat grinder schools at first. Try to find a traditional teacher. They are more concerned about the student's overall development and well being than making a killing machine and crippling their students. Go to the yahoo yellow pages thingy and put in your town and do a search for "martial arts." Something will come up. Good luck.
