  1. you also have to get the car home?

  2. First off he may not be able to sell you the car because in many states your under age. And most likely he's going to put in writing, sold as is. If something go's wrong with the car, he's off the hook. I would be mindful before giving your money away. And don't ever buy a car because it looks good, always have a car checked out before buying it.

    Door number 2 -  process.

    You have to get

    (1) the title signed over - you are not 18 yet.  So your parents have to get it in their name

    (2) a bill of sale

    (3) send the old title and get another new in your name - pay tax

    (4) get insurance

    (5) register the car (you need a license)

    Be happy.

    Good Luck...

  4. You have to get a title from the seller and preferably a bill of sale, showing the car's description, VIN, sellers name and signature, your name and signature, dates. In many states the signed title also acts as a bill of sale. Without a bill of sale, before you get the registration and title in your name, you have no proof that you didn't steal the car if you get pulled over by a cop.

But if you are only 16 without a license, you won't be able to buy insurance, which means you can't register it, which means you can't drive it.

  5. Bottom line is this.  At 16 you can do nothing.  Yes, there are some private sellers that will sell you a car for cash underage, but then you can't drive it.  And it gets more complicated.  You need insurance, which you can't get at 16 since it's a financial dealing, and without insurance you can't get it registered in your name and without insurance and registration, your buddy with a license can't drive it either.

You have to involve your parents in this deal, and they will also know the process you will need to do.

    Good luck.
