I'm 17 right now. I turn 18 in July. I am a fanatic of cars, I own 3 and going on my fourth in a few weeks. I already have 2 jobs, but I'm willing to give them both up to have a job detailing, washing, or selling cars.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what would be the best for a 17/18 year old to get a job like that? What is the most probable? I know soooo much about cars so please dont question my ability to sell them :)

thanks a lot in advance

  1. If you want to sell, try some small used car dealers to begin with, then work your way up to larger dealers as you gain experience. It's also a good way to find out if you are meant to be a salesman. Some people are; some are not.

If you want to detail/wash, try new car dealers in your area, especially luxury car dealers. They wash and detail new cars before delivery to customers, and some wash cars when customers bring cars in for maintenance. Also look for "hand wash" and detailing shops in your area and talk to the manager. Summer is prime time for such shops -- but the work generally goes away in winter -- unless you live in Florida.

  2. You should try asking around local dealerships.

However, most of the time, if you are a salesman, you dont wash/detail cars.

Same as if you are a detailer, you dont sell cars.

Both jobs are specialised trades, and apart from a small, family owned caryard, you wouldnt find the car salesman washing a car.

My advice is to pick one of the two, and stick with that.

Car salesman are typically paid more than detailers, as they get commission. You could also get a company car.

Detailers are replacable, but a good salesman isnt. Detailers will only ever get award wage, because there will be a string of 16,17,18yo's willing to do the job. Salesman can negotiate a wage based on their figures and experience.

Some dealers will be hesitant to employ a young salesman, as some people dont like to buy a car off a young person.

Find a dealer that is modern and aims its cars at younger people.

  3. Why don't you start a mobile detailing business?

Mobile car cleaners that do high-end cars can make good money.

  4. At 17 how do you own 3 cars?  You have to be 18 to sign a legal binding contract to purchase a car.  You have to be 18 to sell a car.
