Last night I placed a bet with my local bookies; coral, and wasnt even asked for Id, my friends say I look older than I am (im 17) but arent you supposed to look 21? Are bookies usually more relaxed with regards to the under 18 law than shops with alcohol and f**s?

  1. Yes they are supposed to, in shops you must check people under 25. As Drbob says, it was also illegal on your side too...

  2. Online companies are very strict with age restrictions. They don't want to ruin their business because of situations like yours. Initial screening usually requires some sort of ID. Did they not ask for your ID? e.g. passport ..

  3. Its against the law to be inside a betting shop if youre under 18. it is the staff's fault for not asking for id if you look under 21 but generally they dont have minors coming in to place bets. its not quite as simple as working in an offlicence i mean consider the amount of kids trying to buy alcohol and f**s compared to going into a betting shop. if you lost a load of money and your parents found out then the bookies staff could be taken to court and lose their jobs. can you not stay out of a shop until youre 18 or is it too hard? show some maturity

  4. I drove 71mph the other day in a 70mph zone.  I was puzzled, I didn't get a speeding ticket!

Seriously, people break the law all the time, and nothing happens.  You chose to broke the law, the member of staff who served you probably was thinking about other things and wasn't paying attention.

I suspect if you win, they'll card you before giving you your money.  So I'd get someone over 18 to cash it in.

  5. So you did something illegal and didn't get caught.  What do you want? a medal or should we throw you in jail?  Don't do it again.  It can cause you and the bookie big problems.  Coral bookies can lose their license, and get fined $1 million.  That is why in Las Vegas if you pull that s++t they bar you from the casinos for life.

  6. That is way illegal and risk losing their ticket. Shoulda carded but whoops.

  7. I work in a bookies - to be honest they're more relaxed in asking for ID. I wouldn't make a big fuss about it - I've been drinking in pubs etc since I was 14. Some people don't bother checking. They definitely are more relaxed than shops because if you serve someone alcohol or cigarettes and they turn out to be under 18 - you pay a fine personally. It doesn't work like that for gambling.

  8. Well, it's also illegal on your side too...
