The above answers are not entirely correct.  In some states, 17 year olds cannot sign a contract, and an airline is a legal contract of carriage.  Check the regulations in your state to be sure.

As long as you have a credit card in your name, you can purchase the ticket, the issue arises if you have any problems and need the contract enforced, in which case if you were not eligible to sign in the first place, the airline could deny compensation.
