  1. yes!!!!!!!!!

I was in the same boat...

You claim yourself on your taxes?

then you are not a dependant!!!

Just fill out your own info, nothing about parents

i had the same problem, out on my own at 17, and wouldnt get finanical aid, it was sooo retarded

not sure about you but my parents dont help me with any school expenses...

talk to your school and finanical aid advisor

fin aid is quick too only 2-3 days

    so apply now :)

ps. retarding others posting ** u can be a dependant until age 24, like parents could keep u on their insureance etc*** but you do not have to be a dependant even if u are 18 or 24!!

dependant means your parents claim they take care of you, they claim this on their taxes, so for the 2008 year will they claim you as a dependant or will u claim yourself?

  2. Do whatever it takes.

  3. nope.  even if you don't live at home, you are a dependent until you are 24 or are a military vet.

  4. I think that financial aid requires that a person who is independent must be 23 years of age or older. You would be listed as dependent even though you  support yourself. Look through FAFSA information and your local college.

  5. Not much. This is a blatantly unfair aspect of the federal financial aid system and it has been that way forever, so I don't expect it will change. If I remember right, the most important thing is whether your parents claim you as a dependent on their income taxes. If you can get them to stop, it might help you a little, but there are no guarantees.

  6. if you are a full time student

  7. yea. I did this before I got married. I showed them my paycheck stubs, a copy of my lease at my apt, and a few other items to my financial aid office and they basically gave me an override as a independent student. Call your financial aid dept at your school and ask tell them you do it all on your own with no help. Otherwise if that doesnt work you can always take out a loan.

  8. Anyone can get "financial aid" regardless of parental income in the form of student loans, so it is doubtful you didn't qualify for anything.  The only way to change your status is to get married, have kids you support, become a veteran or earn a bachelors degree or a couple i can't remember.

It doesn't matter where you live, who claims who on what tax return, if you support yourself or even if your parents plan on paying for your college.  Sorry.

  9. Make an appointment to talk to the director of financial aid at your university.

I was in the same boat more than 20 years ago so I imagine the laws have changed but I explained my situation to the director of financial aid.  He was able to accept a letter from my father stating that I would NOT be claimed as a dependent on his taxes anymore and a statement of my living and other expenses as an independent adult.  With this information they were able to adjust my award amount significantly.
