Yes we Australian's are the friendiest people on earth, just walk in to any bar and say hello and people will talk to you no worries, mate.

I am 28 and doing the same thing and I am scared!! Been offered a job just outside melbourne so maybe we could swap emails and swap "knowledge"???

Hi Ian, I live in Melbourne.  Like any big city it can seem unfriendly at times.  You'll probably make friends with your workmates first, by going out in a group after work.  If you share a house or flat you'll meet lots of people that way too.  [Don't rent one of those so-called "studio apartments", whatever you do! ~  Too isolating.]  Sharing is also far more economical.

Another way to meet people is through leisure activities, of which there is a vast array available to Melbournites. There are groups doing every conceivable sport or hobby, playing music, doing theatre, bushwalking, cycling, etc, etc.  

A third really good way to meet Australians is by volunteering as a firefighter, surf lifesaver, conservationist, or charity worker.

I think you will do fine a friend of my spent a year there, she made loads of friends, she also went alone, I'm sure she would give you a few contacts if you'd like?

The Australians are a great bunch of people and you will have no problem getting to know people either through night life or work.GO FOR IT
