Im 5'9 173 lbs and Im really quick. I feel with a decent defense It is almost easy to keep the puck out of the net. Thats why I think I have what it takes to one day become an NHL Goaltender. Anyone got any ideas on how to get noticed?

  1. Go to college. It's much easier to walk on to a university team and get noticed, than to try out for an NHL affiliated league. I didn't start College hockey till I was 20. I played a few years in juniors and then was asked to play in college. I'm a 21 y/o sophomore. Don't get discouraged either.

  2. Go to every tryout possible. Always wear a jersey with your name on it. Work your but off all summer. Stay away from Beer and Girls.

Remember what Mickey said to Rocky"Woman Weaken Leggs Rock"

  3. A friend of mine was one of the best goalies in Ontario (he's from Stoney Creek, near Hamilton) and had they stayed he probably could have played Junior A, but as it is they moved down here a year ago and he's got a tryout with the local CHL team, it's not the same. Size isn't an issue - the guy is 6'6, quick reflexes, understands the game and strategies inside out. It's not just getting noticed, it's also the level of the competition you play against. I wish you the best, keep us posted on how things pan out.

  4. Put up great numbers at a D1 college and you'll get noticed, by NHL, AHL, ECHL, OHL, CHL, and even the KHL.  Do well at a competitive college and you'll be on your way.

  5. I hate to say this but I am being honest... if you can't grow another 4-7 inches then you won't be noticed.

Take the advice of the guy above me and go to every try out as possible.  It'll be hard because even the ECHL already have their standards.  There will be a bias against someone with your stature, but if you're good they will accept you (or give you some advice).  Good Luck.

  6. Well, I doubt you're as good as you think, you probably would have been scouted if you were- but a lot of ECHL teams have open tryouts. Try writing a few and seeing if you can't arrange to be given a chance. A tape would probably help too if you're as good as you think. If you're worse then you think it'll hurt you, but if you look decent it improves your chances of being looked at.

Just remember that Goaltender is the hardest position to break into as a pro.
