  1. I think the question of your grandparents' birth certificates is academic. If you were born after 1983, you are eligible for a UK passport only if your father or mother were themselves UK born UK citizens. If born before 1983, you are only eligible if your father was a UK born UK citizen.  A claim does not usually extend to a UK born grandfather.

  2. Sorry, but you can't get a UK/Irish passport (unless your grandparents were from Northern Ireland in which case it would be a UK passport). Try some of the geneaology websites. Do you have your grandparents full names and dates of birth/death? Do you have your parents birth certificate details? Maybe contact the Records Offices in London and/or Dublin. Also check the British Consulate website in Melbourne, cos I'm pretty sure the rules for elegibility for a UK passport have changed fairly recently. Good luck!

  3. you need to get your grandparents death certificates - they should show you where they were born.

go to the genealogy section of Q&A and ask questions. find and read the above sites (google them) and then start asking questions. People will tell you what you need to know.

First you need to get their death certificates and then you work backwards from there. I have english ancestry, I do not live in nor have I ever been to england, yet I have been able to trace my english lines back to the 1600s.

Then you contact various genealogy webistes online (there are LOTS OF THEM) including Rootschat, Rootsweb, Ancestry, freeBMD and a few others which are subscription sites so they will cost money. Ancestry also costs so I dont use it much.
