Im christian and i know only God knows when the world will end, but im still scared. I know what your thinking "Stop sweating it, kid" but im still scared. The Mayans or Aztecs couldnt write calinders for ever, right??

Or mabey something happenes to the moon because of gloabal warming.

can some one please help me figure it out.

im scared and im not even 16 yet and theres lots of things i wanna do.

Don't worry! There's absolutely NO evidence for any of the stuff claimed for 2012. Notice that everyone is pushing a slightly different scenario? They latch on to a date and stick with it, but none of these things are actually going to happen. The trouble all started with that Mayan long count calender, right? Well, 2012 is only the end of the calender if you're looking at it in its abbreviated form. It's like people saying the year 9999 will be the end of time - no, the year after will be 10000, you just add another digit.

So don't worry! The only things that will happen in 2012 are the London Olympics.

I know you've already heard it, but I'm going to say "stop sweating it, kid" again.  Lets put the whole thing in perspective.

First off, you need to understand where the 2012 thing came from.  Way back in ancient times, the Mayans had two calendars.  The first was a yearly calendar, kind of like the one we use today.  The other counted time out for the next 5000 years before turning over.  It's the long-term calendar that runs out in 2012.

The Mayans never made an end-of-the-world prediction at the end of their calendar though!  What happened is that someone looked at the calendar and assumed that, since it ran out, it predicted the end of the world.  It's like looking at the calendar on your wall and saying "Oh no! There's nothing after December 31st, 2008!  That must mean the world is going to end!"

When this latest doomsday fad caught on, people started tacking on all sorts of wacky ideas.  From a collision with "Planet X" (which doesn't exist) to a close encounter with "Nibiru" (which also doesn't exist), to magnetic reversal.  This has happened before.  Every few years, a new doomsday fad comes out.  People use it to explain the unknown.  It passes.  Everyone forgets about it.  I'm a biologist by training, but I keep up with other disciplines as well, and believe me when I say that there is *absolutely no evidence* of a 2012 doomsday, nor of impending disaster by any of the ideas associated with it.

So, in your third sentence, you're absolutely right.  The Mayan calendar runs out in 2012 (by our calendar), and they never predicted anything beyond it because it was so far away.  It's for the same reason that you can't yet buy a calendar for the year 3008 - it's too far away to be relevant.

I hope this helps.  I know the world is a scary place, and there are always people out there who *sound* like they know what they're talking about making it even worse.  The best advice I can give is not to sweat the unfounded nonsense bad stuff.  When you ground yourself in reality, things like this look a lot less scary, and free you up to focus your energy on things where you can make a difference.

The videos on YouTube that purport to have evidence for the end of the world in 2012 are disingenuous to say the least. They put together pictures of other objects (e.g. Jupiter, comets even a dust shell around a distant red giant star) and try to scare people. There is no validity to their claims. They present NO EVIDENCE at all.

Scientists don't expect anything out of the ordinary to happen in the year 2012, or specifically on the date December 21, other than the solstice, which happens every year.

None of the "predicted" happenings for 2012 hold up under close scrutiny. "Planet X" and "Nibiru" simply don't exist. The Mayan calendar ends a cycle, but there were no predictions of the end of the world. The Sun doesn't line up with the galactic centre; it's 6 degrees off. No asteroids or comets are actually predicted to hit Earth.

All of this stuff was put together by crackpots in order to promote their books and TV shows, and shamelessly promoted by the History Channel. Don't take any of it seriously!
