You can probably send samples to publishers. Your best bet is to get an agent as your success is also their success.

If you're looking for schooling, you should find a good art school or university and take Illustration.

Take some time and put together a portfolio. Go to or call a library and tell them you are looking for the names of businesses who represent new talent in the area you are seeking. You will get unbiased help here. After that, beware! There are a lot of people out there who just want to take your money!

Some general advice on being an illustrator from personal experience: If you haven't already, it would be a good move go to college and study fine art or illustration - the skills and portfolio you will build there are invaluable, and potential clients are always reassured by a good degree (even though your drawing ability comes first). When you have your portfolio, start joining websites like this one: http://www.illustrationweb.com/ and this one http://www.saahub.com/ (there are many more if you look for them, too) to get your work out there where people can see it if they are searching online for a good illustrator. Having an online presence is a huge bonus - you may find yourself taking jobs from all over the world. Also, you don't need an agent if you are prepared to work hard at promoting yourself - it's not always worth the cut they take in your wages.
