  1. It's better for beginners to start on longer boards because the are more stable and easier to ride.  As you get better, you can start riding short boards which are faster and more maneuverable but also less stable.  The correct height of board depends on your height.  Go to a surf shop and ask for some help and advice in choosing a good board.

  2. well it means exactly what it means...you were surfing on a 9ft longboard meaning that the board was 9ft tall...when you buy a board when you are a beginner, its always good to go long...you not really need to get a 9ft on, but longer is always better bc it offers better balance... also when picking out a board, your height and weight go along with what board ull need to buy, and also the waves youll be riding... go to your local surf shop and ask for their assistance bc thats the only way to make sure youll get the right board

  3. well 9 ft board means that the board is 9 ft long. if you want to buy one and you rode well and liked the board that you were riding with, maybe yuo should get a 9 ft. but be open to different kinds of surfboards like mini-mals and funboards

  4. Congrats on learning how to surf!!

I always recommend that beginners get a longboard, (at least 9' long), as these are the easiest to catch waves with and balance on to stand up.

Here's a great article called 'Learn How to Surf in One Day' that I think is terrific:

Good luck and have fun!!  :-)

  5. It means that the board you rode was 9 ft tall. Nine foot boards are usually used for beginners because they are more stable than shorter boards. They are also used for beginners because they are not very easy to turn and you don't really need to learn how turn when you are just starting to surf. The shorter boards, on the other hand, are easier to turn, but they are not as stable. If you will surf a couple times a week pretty much every week of the year (or most of them) then you can learn how to surf on a short board. If you won't be surfing a lot then you should get a longer board (like the 9 ft one you rode). I hope this helped.

  6. Go to a surf shop and speak with someone knowledgeable about boards. It's a big investment and you need to pick the right board. No one on YA knows your break, or weight. The guys at the surf shop do.

  7. if you are a beginner you should start with longboards, then you should try the smaller ones

Longboard- Easy to control and to stand up

Fish boars- Harder to control, pretty much faster, most difficult

  8. A 9 foot board is a good length to learn the basics on, after about 6 months you can usually start moving down in board size to like a 7'6 funboard and eventually end up on a shortboard. So i would suggest buying a 7-9 foot softtop (the longer the easier to learn on).

  9. If you did well on a 9 footer during your lessons, it might be a good idea. But before you buy ANYTHING take Sufammo's advice and go to a local surf shop and talk it over with the industry professionals there. They surf where you do, and they know the break(s). We don't. They will help you pick the right board for your weight, skill level, local wave conditions and your budget. In time, you may want to switch to a short(er) board, but that can come later. I have been surfing for 42 years, and I hope you have as much fun as I have had.
