Im a little confused with baby foods and ages?

My daughter is 5months now and at 6 months i want to put her on some solids.

I am just confused what foods to give her..leading upto an age where she is eating the same meals as us.

For the moms out there with experience, at what ages did you introuce different types of food? And what types of food?

I would ask my nurse but they kept me insane with all the rules they have.....i would rather go with the tried and true mothering methods...if that makes sense.

Up till now i have only ever breastfed her, and she has an odd bowl of baby rice cereal when she's been sick alot. She sometimes struggles to keep a belly full of liquid down as she has gotten older!

She is also getting increasingly hungry!

Thanks in advance!

  1. My daughter started solids at 4.5 months, her doctor gave me the go ahead because she was eating 40+ oz of formula a day and still was hungry.  I skipped the rice/oatmeal because it was harsh on her.  I started with veggies first, and then fruit.  Because there is no food allergies in our family I just gave her a new food every two days (again her dr. said it was fine).  I went to stage two foods around 6.5 months old.  She now eats table food at 8 months old.

  2. start with stage one foods for her. then later on stage 2 and up. my son is 10 months he eats stage three. and cheese and little of the stuff we eat that he can chew

  3. I just started my boys on rice cereal. I was told to start with giving them vegetables because the fruit is sweeter and they may not like the veggies after the fruit. Also to introduce a new food every 4 days so if baby has an allergy to it you can tell what they are allergic to. I havent  given them anything other than rice cereal yet but my mom told me this (she had 4 kids) and a friend (3 kids) as well. Good luck!

  4. I started with rice mixed with formula and then moved on to veggies and fruits.  By 6 months..my little one was eating tiny pieces of thinly sliced turkey breast.

  6. There are no set rules, since it depends on your baby and your preferences. (And yes, some doctors and nurses have their own 'rules' -- but they are all different, and most are just opinion.)

Nothing but breastmilk or formula until around 6 months or more. (And breastmilk/formula is the main part of baby's diet until around a year.)

    Beyond that -- whatever works:

You can start with any food you like (fruits, veggies, cereals meats.)

You can give babyfood, or pureed home-cooked foods, or you can start with table food.

You can offer just a taste or two  for months, or you can move onto 2-3 regualr meals a day after a few weeks.

You can practice babyled weaning (not offering solids until baby expresses clear interest and is able to self-feed) or you an offer anytime after 6 months.

If you start with purees, you can progress through all the stages, or you can move onto table food as soon as baby is able.

You can buy Gerber 'toddler meals' for years ... or you can feed baby off the table as soon as possible.

Many of the 'rules' on giving babyfood are very outdated, based on old research, old babyfeeding practices [i.e. the practice of starting with rice cereal began when most babies were fed home-made formula and so needed added iron very early -- rice cereal could be fed to tiny babies who weren't really ready for solids], and old-wives tales.

FWIW, I started with rice cereal at about 5 1/2 months; gradually offered other babyfoods, and began transitioning to table foods around 9 months. (Though she stayed on pureed meats until past one year.).

It's mostly for fun -- so whatever  you and your baby enjoy is fine.

  7. give her mushed up bananas and avocados, for dinners, try some pureed sweet potato until shes showing signs that shes ready to eat what your eating, this stage comes naturally at around 8 months. Basicly I gave my son anything I ate at dinner pureed a bit so he can learn to chew and learn to love flavours but keep it chunky so she can learn to chew. At around 10 months I started giving him cheerios and bites of my toast, and at around a year he was basicly eating everything I eat.

  8. SInce she is breastfed, maybe you would like to try Baby Led weaning?  That is were you don't offer purees or spoon feed, you let your child lead you, and self feed.

I am going this route with my next baby.

If BLW doesn't interest you, than go ahead and start with purees at 6 months, either homemade or commerical.  There are really no *rules* for that, (like going in color order etc)
