I am not sure how long you can stay I was there a few weeks ago and I stayed there for 15 days. You just have to show them your passport and tell them why you are there. If you have no reason just make up some story OR... just jump the fence again oh ya you cant do that this time there is a BRIDGE, so you gotta make like da cubans and swim.

Take your passport and visa.  You will need a visa to stay more than a few weeks.  BTW, its hard to get on welfare up here and if you don't have the right papers, people will not hire you!  Its easier to be in the US to get work, welfare, credit cards and so on.  You cannot get a bank account without proper papers from Canadian gov't
