start out with a longer board

You should start out with a fun shape board around 7 feet or so. This type of board will be easy to catch smaller waves which is what you should be concentrating on if you are a just starting. The shape of the board will make it easy for you to keep your balance and it will maintain an easy level of speed.

one that is long . . . but not one of those WAY long ones cuz thats too big. Good Luck!

Definitely go for a longer board, but nothing too big that you won't be able to handle.  I would start out with a fun shape between 6'5" and 8'.  The bigger the board the easier it will be to balance and catch the smaller waves that you will want to catch at first!
