  1. That depends on how much taller.  Be ready to take some vicious punishment and keep coming back for more.  If you can tollerate pain, or thrive on it, size shouldn't make a difference.  The obvious answer is to come from underneath, but what else are you going to do.  Try to protect your head.

  2. Without knowing your weight class, it forces a very broad answer to this question.

I have been around boxing my entire life. I have not only watched boxing, I have studied pugilism. Ironically, my family is filled with boxers that were all very short in their weight classes too. So I think I can give you some decent advice. It is important to understand a rule in boxing. Evaluate your opponents weakness’s before evaluating your own. Try to evaluate what creates problems for a taller boxer versus your short stature. Do that before thinking about your obstacles. If you have ever played football or know anything about the sport, blocking is all about leverage. The player with the ability to get lower than his opponent will be able to drive him where he wants to push him 99% of the time.

You need to think with that mentality. You are the shorter fighter; therefore you need to learn a bullying style against taller fighters. Get as low as you can, still being effective with your crouch. A taller fighter is totally discombobulated when he can’t sit back and jab his way to victory. He wants to fire off jabs, it is 70% of a taller fighter’s shtick, and you MUST take that away. You accomplish this by driving like a football player, constantly moving forward with the goal of pinning him against the ropes.

When the fighter is pinned, that is when you unload with a barrage of punches to his body. 80% of your punches should be aimed at his body. Force him to defend his midsection, and this will allow you to get higher percentage shots upstairs. Your short stature will not allow you to fire off on his head, so you need to make every single punch count when it is aimed at his cranium.

Lastly, remember that your trouble with achieving head shots is equal to his trouble in getting clean body shots. DO NOT try to back off a taller fighter. This allows his reach to take effect, and I am sure you already realize, you do not want him fully extending his arms when he hits you. That is a good way to get cheap, unwanted, plastic surgery. Another thing you need to remember. If I am in the corner of a taller fighter that is fighting the shorter you, I am telling him to lean on you the entire fight when you come inside, so that your legs get tired of holding his body-weight. Any seasoned manager would do that, so you need to counter it by making him pay. Dig at his body. If he closes his guard, beat the **** out of his arms. I mean fire off mad shots at his biceps as if it were his head. They like to smile when you do that. They are happy you are not hitting them in the head, and hope you think that your punches are ineffective.

You can bet after a few rounds of that, he won’t be smiling. His arms will be so bruised that he will not even want to lift them. When you see him smile, know that he is subconsciously saying, “That hurts.” They smile trying to trick you into thinking it is not effective, but pound him until his arms and ribs are broken.

An aside: You also need to include bench pressing, and double your workout on the heavy bag. Some of these tall guys are going to be so d**n strong; you have to train your body to create an ability to push them. Otherwise it will be like trying to push a brick wall.

Good luck my friend, and God Bless

  3. i have the same problem and im an inch shorter than you but my sparring partners are all bigger.

    1. Footwork - You need to be able to be the one to decide when to fight especially against taller fighters. Make it hard for them to get to you. Also good footwork allows you to get inside, do your work, and spin to the left or right so that they cant follow up your attack with their own. Without good footwork you wont be successful vs a taller fighter. Thats fact.

    2. head movement - You gotta realize that becuase they are taller they are always looking down at you and can see everything you do. Its a great natural advantage in boxing. So to get inside or to get them to hesitate just enough so you can make a move, you need to make them miss. I like to let them jab a bit and slide their punches. Once they miss a few times they start to hesitate or get frustrated. Both which is great for a smaller fighter trying to move inside.

    3. BODY SHOTS - This is your advantage once your inside. Put your fists into any part of the body they leave open and throw with some real power behind them. If you do that, they will jump back, which gives you an oppurtunity to continue to move forward and land more big shots. The natural reaction to a body shot is to drop your hands, so now you have an open shot to the head. body shots also take the gas right out of you.

    4. Jab - Learn to use your jab at different speeds, with different power and especially at different angles. Its not used for damage, use it to get inside and set up big shots. Try to be quick on your feet and throw sharp jabs on the move and eventually theyll make a mistake giving you your oppurtunity. Also i LOVE to throw hard jabs right in the middle of the stomach. ON tv it doesnt look to hurt that much. but after a few of those youll notice the effects.

  4. practice slipping and go in close to fight on the inside. practice the u-slip and the v-slip. practice go inside with a slip and bend to the side while throwing hooks to the liver and kidneys. talk to your trainer about this technique. if you watch a tyson fight he used to use stepping to the side and hooking a lot.

  5. Having problems with a taller fighter huh?  Add some mixed martial arts to your arsenal.  MMA fighters have no problem taking out a taller, stronger opponent.  If your just looking for strictly boxing watch Mike Tyson video clips.  The peak a boo defense is great against taller fighters.  Weave the jab and counter with the over hand.  I'm a taller fighter and have more trouble with shorter guys who know how to use that technique to their advantage than guys my own height.
