Im a vegetarian i was wondering about kosher items.?

Well as im sure you know by now im vegetarian.. i dont usually eat yougurt cause of the gelatin but now i see that it has kosher gelatin... is this for vegetarians?

  1. No, it is not. Kosher gelatin means, it is not made from animal bones, as the Jewish dietary law prohibits eating meat and dairy together. So it is usually made from fish bones, as fish is "parve", so to speak "neutral" in a Jewish diet.

    But is still from an animal and thus not suitable for vegetarians.


  2. Gelatin, in general, has compounds that are derived from animals that are not kosher, like pigs. They may be derived from kosher animals like cows, but most of them are vegetarian - so no, it's not FOR vegetarians, but it's pretty safe for you to consume.

  3. Kosher gelatin might be vegetarian or it might not.

    I'm told it is often made from fish bones; which I would not consider vegetarian.

    If I'm reading the ingredients of a food item and it says "kosher gelatin" I don't buy it.

    The idea of Kosher was not formulated for vegetarians, so I do not consider the word to be a reliable guide to determine if a food is suitable for vegetarians.
