well im 18 years old and taking my behind the wheel test in two days. Im really nervous, I've been practicing with my parents for a couple of days now around the test routes. I just need to know from people that have taken the test before what I really need to focus on. Also I wanted to add that I live in california and how many mistakes am i allowed to make.

Thanks in advance

  1. There really is no main thing to focus on. Be safe, if you trained well it will all kick in and above all else dont talk to the tester, just follow instructions and answer any quetions as short and as simple as possible and keep your eyes on the road.

If they still require parrell parkikng, and cutting your left turns short is about the biggeys.

Mistakes are scored at different levels, point system.

Hands at 11 and 1. Mirrors, side, rear and look forward. Be alert. DEEP breath an think calm.

And test early in the morning, the tester hasent had that nut case that just cut off a big rig and started explaining for 30 min why the drive failed the test and finds out the driver can hardly speak english or just doenst want to.

You get a good sleep, and light oat meal breakfast with diet soda, no fruit or fruit juice

And Good Luck, good drivers always wanted, bad ones stay home

  2. know where the controls are for the car i.e. parking brake, windshield wiper controls, headlight controls,  etc.  you'll be ask to point them out.  also, listen closely to what the DMV person says and follow their instructions,  ex.  turn right at the next street.  not doing so will result in you failing.  just remember to relax, focus and listen.  if you know how to drive and the rules of the road you should have no problems passing.

  3. The U.S. tests are nothing like Japanese tests but here are a few tips for one who passed both tests without failing once...

When making a turn or lane change, always make OBVIOUS looks at the mirror first, hit the blinker, then make an OBVIOUS look over the shoulder.

When going through intersections of any kind, always scan for traffic or pedestrians. Scan VERY HARD.

Stay at the speed limit at all times.

I also believe that the standard is to hold the wheel at 10 and 2.

I haven't heard of anyone who's been taken on the highway or has been made to parallel park during a test (I understand that it's not done anymore due to the testers being afraid of what might happen).

When you come in for the final park at the DMV, they'll tell you park where you want. For a final flourish and a perfect parking job, select a spot and watch as your right or left mirror (depending on which side you choose to park on) just clears the parking spot line, turn hard in the direction you need to go. That should land you perfectly in the parking spot.

  4. i still remember my test fresh

ok things i messed up on was the turnabout (didnt pull back into the spot straight) (and kno what a turnabout is)

and turning signal. make sure u do that

i dont kno if their is a pedestrian walkway where ur DMV is but at mine their is one right after u start, if there are ppl there walking across and u dont stop for them, they fail u right there. so make sure u stop if their is one and u see some people

also, they asked me when i backed into a parking spot that if we were on a grade, what should i do once i park? and i pulled up the e-brake (after about 20 seconds of thinking lol)

that means that if ur on a hill, pull ur e-brake up so u dont go down it.

another thing, when u parallel park, MAKE SURE ur wheels are turned TOWARD the curb. so if ur car rolls. it dont roll out into the street.

also dont just use ur mirrors. they told me to back up and i just checked my rear view. if they want u to back up then check ur mirror and quickly glance behind ur car to make sure that their isnt another car.

remember to come to a complete stop ur foot has to be all the way down for 3 counts. look both ways and turn

dont get into a car wreck

hope this helps, this test isnt even hard, people over exaggerate how hard it is
