  1. 1.  commercial air travel is safer *because* there are fewer airplanes.  Any dipstick can get in a car, turn the key and go out & kill your family.  Only well-educated highly-trained dipsticks are flying commercial airliners.

    2.  when you've been driving a bit longer, you'll see just how much control you *don't* have over your fate.  Next time you're on the highway, notice how many cars you see in close proximity to yours.  Any one of them can take you out in a second and you'll have no control over it.  What's more, those drivers don't have to comply with strict rules about getting enough rest, and getting enough training.  In a car, your fate is in the hands of ?????????.

    3.  Never in the history of commercial aviation has there been an injury or death caused by the failure of all the engines on a multi-engine aircraft.

Seriously, it's never happened.  In-flight shut-downs rarely occur and when they do, the crew is trained to land the aircraft on one engine.

Unlike your car, many parts on the aircraft are replaced *before* they break down.

  2. I was terrified of flying until I did a few things. The first was that I played Microsoft Flight Simulator so that I can get an idea on how the plane works. No joke on this. Next, I only fly with trusted airlines. Just like you have "brand name" gasoline which works better than the other cheap stations, in my eyes, you have the same thing with planes. I am scared to fly American Airlines because of the 9/11 story, but I do fly it when I need to. I will never fly Iberian since they had a plane that went on fire a few years ago. I dont fly United Airlines because their planes just look too old. I love British Airways and jetBlue.

    So you get the idea?

Don't worry about the turbulence. Just remember that the plane has been in the same situation over and over, and sometimes in even worse situations. Remember that the pilot is always talking to someone on ground who detects turbulence and thunder storms and all that, and the pilot will not be told to fly in an area with too much turbulence.

I hope this makes you feel better.

  3. easy to solve. if your afraid to fly , then don't fly<

  4. Yes, there are indeed more cars on the road than planes in the air. But injury and death statistics are based on the number of incidents per passenger mile. It's a much more accurate comparison. And airline travel is by far the safest.

Also, remember that when you're in the air, your pilot is a professional. He's sharing the sky with other professionals. It's wide open, and there is no other traffic zooming past you only feet away. Spacing of air traffic is strictly regulated to maintain safe distances.

When driving, you encounter hundreds of other vehicles. You don't know the skills of the drivers, how much sleep they've had, if they've been drinking, the conditions of their vehicles, or how distracted they are. The road is a far more dangerous environment.

You are mis-informed when you say planes don't glide. Given the right conditions, they do glide. Granted, an engine failure is not the ideal situation, but it doesn't necessarily mean the plane will go straight down. Pilots have landed big jets before with no engine power.

Every time you go from point A to point B, there is a risk, no matter what mode of transportation you use. Some methods pose less of a risk than others. There is far less risk in a commercial airliner than any other method.

  5. Comparing the number of fatalities per mile driven vs the the number of miles flown, it's much safer to fly.

  6. yes you have a bit more control when driving but you cant control the others like drunks or youngsters acting crazy you could total the car or dent it but you could loose body parts or get scared for life the planes are better kept (they rarely breakdown and fall out of the sky) their pilots are better trained than any prof.driver and are watched more my personal favorite reason to fly is at 700 mph you wont feel a thing the best way to beat your fear is to stand up to it ,i jumped and i beat it you can to

  7. safety is based upon passenger miles, ie number of passengers times distance flown.

planes have a few hundred passengers vs one or two for a car.

you may think that you have more control of your fate in a car but what about the drunk driver in the lane next to you or the one on the cell phone coming at you?

the plane can function on a single engine.  the likely hood of both failing is extremely rare.  engines are overhauled every 8000 hours or so.  planes undergo inspections and service all the time.  it is a highly rated industry, at least in the modern world.

some african countries have extremely poor records, accordingly they are banned from international airspace and landing in most other countries.

  8. I was afraid of flying in my younger years but realized that it is a lot safer than driving but I was still somewhat nervous so my wife bought me some Dramamine and this made me feel more comfortable and I stopped worrying and flying today is no big deal....
