Im going to Jocotepec, Jalisco, Mexico (near Guadalajara) as a high school exchange student for about 10 months, and ive been to mexico before and gotten sick from the water, so im wondering if that means i wont get sick again, since my body's already "used" to it. or will i just have to brush my teeth with the water and end up getting sick? will my body eventually get used to it?

also is it in ALL parts of mexico that you have to throw the toilet paper in the garbage? or are there some parts of mexico where its ok to flush it?

  1. as long as you buy bottle water and sewer safe toilet paper you ll be fine>>>>

  2. I have visited in Mexico City, Cuernavaca, and Acapulco and have always flushed my Toilet Paper.  I have never heard of

    not flushing it.

I always drank bottled water but invariably returned home with cold symptoms and feeling sick.

In my opinion, Mexico would be the worst possible choice to go as an exchange student.  Try to switch to Europe.

  3. I think you should stick to the bottled water in Mexico.  In some parts of Mexico, the toilets flush fine.

  4. I can't believe the negative stereotypes that so many people hold and spread about Mexico. It's ridiculous. Don't listen to them.

How cool that you're going to Jalisco! It's a beautiful part of Mexico. It's the cultural heart of the country and you should have a wonderful experience. Guadalajara is one of my favorite cities. I used to live there.

Jocotepec is near Lake Chapala, an area that is home to the largest group of American expats in Mexico. Most of them are retirees, but you won't lack for English-speakers in this part of Jalisco, in case you get homesick. There's even an English-language newspaper here, the Colony Reporter.

As for the water, OK, you may get sick. Hey, that's just part of getting used to another country. To avoid it, stick to bottled water. And no, there's no need to bring in water from the U.S., the bottled water there is fine. You may even use it to brush your teeth just to be safe. I travel a lot to Mexico and I use the tap water to brush my teeth and never had a problem.

However, I do avoid lettuce and other produce that may have been washed in tap water. It's a bummer, because I really love salads. Cooked produce, or produce with skins that you don't eat are fine. You can also buy a produce cleanser to wash your fruits and veggies.

As for flushing the toilet, it depends on a given building's plumbing system. Modern buildings are fine. But if you're living in an older home with a fragile system, you may have to use a waste basket. Ask the family.

All in all, relax and enjoy.

  5. YOUR BEST BET WILL BE TO TAKE ALOT OF GALLONS OF WATER FROM U.S  AND YOU WILL GET SICK AGAIN WITH THE WATER.
