  1. The Tate gallery-britain and modern, the markets-portobello, camden, it depends on what you like, but there something for all tastes

  2. You're not a typical American huh? Yet you still think we all wander around old streets thinking about Jack the Ripper. hmmm.

London is a modern vibrant city more like New York than some haunted ancient place.  If you want scary stuff then do as the other American tourists do and go to the London Dungeons.  If you want to experience real London then go for cocktails, see a show, take a jog through Hyde Park.

  3. Well, London isn't one big place really. It's made up of many boroughs with different characters.

The West end is the best part, as it has all the famous landmarks. Mayfair is a very expensive area to live in. Soho is very cosmopolitan with s*x shops/shows and g*y bars. Then just down the road from there is China town. Then there's the area with all the theatres. Westminster has places such as the House of Parliament. Then there's Covent Garden with markets for unique goods and hand crafts, or sometimes there's a street show. London is such a big place. When I go I always love going into the Fortnum and Mason store as it's very posh. The London cabbies are great as they know everything you would need to know for a trip.

You want to avoid South London, south of the river though as it has many immigrants from places such as Africa and the kids are all in gangs and stabbing each other.

The East end traditionally had a culture of the working classes, where they had a community where they helped each other out and had traditional food such as jellied eels and pie and Mash, but it's all changing now and there aren't many real cockneys there any more as much immigration from other countries bringing different cultures.

  4. It is an interesting place alright. The "ordinary boring" tourist sites are not ordinary and boring in London. The Tower of London for instance has so much history it would take a 1000 Y/A Q&A to go through it all and that is just a small part of what is there. If you go to the site of the London listings magazine Time Out (I do not know the URL) you can see what is on offer week by week. Fascinating stuff I tell you.

Yes, I'm baffled too.  We're speaking the same language but use different English words to mean something else or what'ever etc.

For example - the car (automobile) - you say hood, we say bonnet - both hats and both English words.  Just don't let it worry you.  We know what we're talking about, don't we?
