  1. no shag carpets

    they were soo 70's

    hardwood is nice

and then in the bedrooms put carpet

i suggest you don't put ceramic

its very unforgiving to glass and is very cold in the morning

if you want ceramic, i suggest a linoleum look alike

  2. We are about  to build for the second time. Please ask for some time to be certain about your choices. They do try to rush you and they don't like to make changes once you give the go ahead. Tell everyone up front that it will take you time to decide. Don't be forced to hurry. there were many things we did differently this time around.

we went to hardware stores to browse and see what's available long before time to choose. think about extra cost you might be racking up. it really adds up fast. Think about CLEANING. that was my biggest oversight.

we redid the flooring within 2 years because our choices didn't go well together. it's so hard to "see" what you can expect without PICTURES. I surfed plans the first time around, but this time I surfed decorating mags instead and saved the trouble of former mistakes. I'm copying the pictures.

Regarding  lighting, we wished we'd done fades, undermount, and track, no stark overheads.

Other things we tweaked...more practical in appliances and cleaning.

When we extended our stacked stone fireplace to the ceiling, that money could've bought a corian kitchen sink. You get the idea.

Other big change? We have four sons, so we went with a urinal in their bathroom. There's a reason most businesses have to spring for those.

  3. Dude if you want to sell your house eventually I would get NO CARPET what-so-ever. Wood is the in thing right now for flooring. In your kitchen I would use granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances. Make sure you make you master suite large enough and has an attached bathroom and a walk in closet. Fireplaces are good selling points as well. Don't forget to make sure your landscapin and and outside of your house has curb appeal. Remember that it's ok to choose bright colors sometimes but if you want to sell your home sometime in the near future go with neutral paint colors with brightly colored accents. Having more that one one bathroom possibly 2 (with duel sinks) and 3 bedrooms. I'm starting to get tired or i would go on lol

  4. We use Abzorb Mats in hi-traffic area (under appliances, on garage floor, under grill outback, in pet areas, etc. to protect flooring. Get a roll, you'll cut to size & use this all over:

    Cheap and sturdy stuff!!

And stock up on some Draft Stoppers; they work wonders, and they're cheap...

  5. dont cob job **** and do it right other then that, if you dont know how to do stuff im sure theres diys on everything nowadays so google it...

  6. So happy for you!

When you are investing big bucks in furnishings it's really a good idea to do your homework for example there are studies about colors and how they affect a person. If you select those 70's colors: olive green, gold and orange....I don't think you will want to stay at home very long.....know what I mean. LOL

Seriously make your home peaceful and neutral and use brighter colors with accessories...things that pop....like area rugs and bright chairs...but keep the walls and 90% of everything else neutral....such as grays, beige or a very misty green....anything that reflects nature.

Check with Consumer reports when it comes to your other needs before you go shopping. It will help you rate the products before talking to the sales people.

Call your electric company and get their help with saving energy using the best appliances you can afford within your budget. Water heaters and anything along that line really needs to be energy efficient. We just installed a new air conditioner unit  and we learned a lot about the state's requirements when it comes to certain measurements...so depending where you live...look into the regulations.

Good luck and best wishes on your new home!

  7. Carpeting...

No berber, please. Try not to use the same carpet throughout the house (too hard to replace one room). I like the hallways to be wood or laminate (you end up with a traintrack wear pattern with carpet). Watch your colors, you live them a long time.

    Lighting...

Use fan/lights in bedrooms. Plan for dimmers or spot lights in kitchen. Outlets, cable, phones...more is better.

  8. how long your going to live there is the direct reposnce to this question...

there is 5 year carpet and 10 year carpet.. along with electrical choices.. some are designed to fail in 5 years some 15...

you need to decided how long your going to live there before you can get any sort of good advice here...

  9. I am moving into my new house on the 14th!

My best advice.....the upgrade costs are pricey.

I ended up adding another 26k to the cost of my house.

Be prepared for making a ton of decisions.

Like if you want extra lights, where you want the cable lines, and on and on and on with questions.

ASK TO HAVE A FEW DAYS TO DECIDE.

Because once you make your choices there is no  going back.  They lock you in, even if the hole for the foundation is not dug.

Go for upgrades in these areas....kitchen cabinets, carpet and hardwood flooring, a/c and central vac.

  10. I clean houses for a living... Keep to a medium color carpet. Too light will show dirt and two dark will show things like lint from light color socks and light color dust. Stay with earth tones for a calm effect you can live with for a long time. A soft oatmeal color is nice. I like natural colors, for walls and furniture, like soft grean light browns with a little punch of color like burnt orange or deep red.
