I am not sure were you have received your information, but the streets here are not lined with thugs, gangster, pimps and hoods??

I have lived here for most of my adult life and have only had 2 incidents were people half my size have made trouble with me, and both were intoxicated.

Do not worry your going to beaten or ravaged here, we may have our problems, but 90% of the personal crimes against individuals is done by some they know or associate with. Few random acts of violence here.

There is no where you really have to avoid. The only tme trouble goes down is when people make bad drug deals, sleep with someones girlfriend, etc. just walking down the street you wont have any issues and likley wont see a gang. And if you see one they're not going to do anything unless you say something to them.

I don't know if I would call them 'gangstas', but I would avoid three key places:

Jane and Finch which is the north west side of Toronto,

Scarborough, which is the eastern end of Toronto around the Malvern shopping mall, and

Sherbourne and Dundas, which is the south east of Toronto.

HOWEVER, it really just depends on being in the wrong place at the wrong time here, just like any other major north american city.
