  1. Everyone's in the same boat. It's going to be uncomfortable for a couple of days until you get into a routine.

First of all, no one's going to be looking at you and thinking, "She's new! She doesn't have any friends!" They're going to be feeling uncomfortable that THEY don't know anyone, and how they are going to find their class.

Second, because everyone's in the same boat, look around and smile at people, especially the people who look nervous and shy. Stop and talk to those people. Talk to whoever you sit next to in class. Just make yourself smile and talk to people. The more you practice, the easier it will get. Tell yourself, just 20 more smiles and I'll have a friend! Just 5 more meaningless convos and I'll have a friend! :D

For your 4-hour gap, find the student lounge and watch TV, or go to the library and read a magazine. Look up and smile if you catch someone's eye, but you don't have to talk if you don't want to. (Talking in class is easy, because it's just for a brief time.)

Join one or two clubs. It will be a relaxed atmosphere, and you'll soon find people you're comfortable with. Remember that others are also shy, and if you can muster the courage to talk to them, you'll be doing both of you a favor.
