Im confused about canadian french slang?

i read that canadian french slang derive from catholic liturgical equipment, rather than the references to prostitution that are more common in France?

why??

can anyone explain please?

  1. It's just what is says it is.

    Slang (and more commonly the swear words) are oftentimes derived from things pertaining to the Catholic church. For example, French Canadians will often swear by saying "Tabernac!" which is used in reference to the tabernacle. Yet it would be rare to hear something like this is European French however as most of there swear words are not derived in the same manner.  


  2. it probably has to do with history, but I cannot give you a good explanation for it, only theories. The French-Canadians were almost governed by the church up until the 1960s, it's probably why such swear words came up.

    I cannot say why, but it's true.
