  1. REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement.  I thought it was supposed to be the only sleep stage in which it existed, which is why the stage was named after.  So now I don't know what you're asking.

  2. Err... REM is actually stage 5.

Stage 1: Beginning of sleep, fairly light

Stage 2: Brains slows down body (lasts for about 15-20 min)

Stage 3: Transition period between light and deep sleep.

Stage 4: Deep sleep (has delta brainwaves and lasts around 30 min)

    Stage 5: REM sleep.

By the way, the body does not progress through these stages of sleep consecutively. Sleep begins in stage 1 and progresses into stages 2, 3, and 4. After stage 4 sleep, stage 3 and then stage 2 sleep are repeated before entering REM sleep. Once REM sleep is over, the body usually returns to stage 2 sleep. Sleep cycles through these stages maybe around 4 or 5 times in a night.
