  1. You can buy into an online tournament for any sum of money and the tournaments usally last several hours.  However, it does take some skill and luck and practice.

  2. To learn the game properly go to

    www.learnpoker.tk

then click on " How To Play"

and choose either the free poker tutorial or download the free software and use the completely free poker training room.

  3. couple points:

    1. Poker takes a while to figure out what's going on. Most people would agree that you need a minimum of 1k games before you should put more than $1 down per _game_ (not ring games, where $1 per hand is common.) I played maybe 3-5k games with play money first, then another 1k games at $1 per (with a losing record and negative return) before I started seeing a profit. If you pay to play your learning games, you're going to lose a lot of money.

    2. Getting first is difficult. Most people are happy just to cash, which pays usually 1:1 for the larger tourneys, up to 2:1 for the smaller sng's.

    3. Online tournaments are usually done within 12 hours.

    4. First place pays around 800 to 1000 times the entry fee, depending on the size of the tourney. Usually, payouts are expressed as %'s of the total buy-in pool, and first pays about 20% of the total.

In my opinion, take your money and invest in a few poker books first. Then, as you are digesting this, practice with play money. You aren't going to get good overnight, and being lucky will only get you so far.

  4. Online poker can be a great way to make some extra money, however the game is not as easy as it seems. There is alot to learn and it can take several years to master the game, even the top professionals are constantly learning new techniques and practicing to sharpen their skills. If you are new to poker i recommend starting out with a play money account. once you have learned the basics of the game and feel comfortable playing online then you can perhaps risk your own money. Visit my website http://www.pokerroomhustle.com  it offers great poker strategy articles and tips that can help you learn the game you can even claim a free $50 Bankroll to help you get started in the world of online poker once your ready. To answer your question about tournaments, Tournaments can last from anywhere between an hour to several days, it depends on the amount of runners (ppl in the tournament) and blind structure of the tournament. A typical online tournament though, with a decent amount of runners,  will usually last around 1-8 hours. If you buy in to a $100 tournament and there is 100 runners, the prize pool will be around $10K, now the house will take a percantage of that as rake and the rest will be paid out to the top finishers, first place will get around 25-40%(depending on the poker site) of the prize pool, so you will get around $2.5-4K if you win a $100 Tourney with 100 runners.

  5. It really depends on how many players are at the table, not only who much you could potentially make but also how long the game might go on....

When I read you mentioned "learning" to play poker online I remembered a very cool and insightful section over at DoylesRoom.... it is an entire section on their site dedicated to education....really cool tips and tutorials guided by the legend himself (Doyle)....

    Good luck!

  6. Its very hard, especially for beginners, I dont know why you think you will win so easily. Most of the players online are very good and they will use every opportunity to win money.

  7. Umm I don't know the answer you want, but I play Poker for fun on Pokerstars.com. Download the program and theres a lot of free rooms to play in and practice. Then move onto gambling with money, its set in different incriments and skills (like faster tables for some) so you can try things out at a pace. They have high stake tournaments often so you can try getting a lot back.

  8. I play lots of tournments for cash on pokerstars.com. If the buy-in is 100 bucks, depends on how many people are i the tournment. Let's say its a tourney of 10 people and u pay 100, then u'd probably (if u make it in first place) you'd make around 600 to 700. Poker is fun/addictive/smart game, but you should start practicing online with play chips first be4 u get into the real money games. Tourneys also last depending on how many are playing in a tourney, tourney of 10 will last about 1.5 to 2 hrs, so u ddo the math.

  9. If you're a new player and considering $100 tournaments I think you'll be disappointed and will lose a lot of money fast. Beginners should start with lower buyin tourneys...try a $5, if you can't win there you're not going to compete at the $100 level.
