  1. Go to Staples or Office Depot and buy an "engineers scale".  It is a ruler that is calibrated in different scales.  If you live less than a half mile to school:

    1/2 mile=2640 feet

Useful length on sheet of paper=9 inches (3/4 feet)

to fit 1/2 mile onto a sheet of paper, it would need to be at a scale of 2640feet/9inch=293 feet/inch ~ 300 feet/inch

One edge of the scale will have "30" at one end. That means that there are 30 marks per inch.  Each of those marks will represent 10 feet.

    Have fun.

  2. I may be misunderstanding your question, but if you want the map to not contain a whole lot of extra area -- meaning that your starting point and your ending point will spread mostly across the page, then it will depend on how far the trip is.

If you walk to school, you can use feet or meters.

If you take the bus, miles should be fine.

The point is to show something meaningful, so do whatever makes the most sense.

  3. mapquest
