  1. Pines are usually evergreens, which means that they stay green all year long.  They do not have leaves but needles and instead of flowers to pollinate and produce they have seeds in Cones, Pine cones if you will.

There is and Australian pine tree, or that's what it is called.  It is not a true pine.

(The Australian Pine is originally from Australia but it is not in reality a pine tree. Contrary to real pine trees Australian Pines do flower and the needles are actually compressed, segmented leaves.)

  2. A pine is a conifer (produces a cone).  Its genus is Pinus and it's in the family Pinaceae.  The Australian pine is known as the wollemi pine, but is not in the genus Pinus, or even in the family Pinaceae.

  3. conifer - don't know about au, though.

  4. Pines are of the genus Pinus, family Pinaceae.  They are a conifer with needle shaped leaves.  Norfolk Island Pine, Hoop Pine, Bunya Bunya pine and Chilean Pine are some of those that are native to Australia, but many other lumber producing varieties have been introduced by commercial growers.
