i would like to know about fire managers, handcrews, hotshot crews, helitack crews, smokejumpers, engine crews, and the Incident Management Team, and what they do in wildfires and prescribed fires. If you are in one of these groups of people, it would be highly appreciated if you would tell me what you do so i can write about the roles of these people. Or if you know anything about these roles, that would also be highly appresiated.

Thanks.

  1. if you are doing the report and picked this subject WHY do you want or need someone else to do your work

  2. Wild fires and prescribed fires use the Incident Command System that delegates responsibilities for the following roles

    IC- Incident Commander

Operations- Ops Chief is responsible for the fire fighting, both on the ground and in the air.

Logistics- the Logistics Chief makes sure there are all of the adequate means at hand for the entire ICS to work.  This can include drinking water, communications facilities, food, shelter, and routing fire fighting resources (equipment and personnel).

Liaison - is responsible for insuring that partner agencies have a chance to participate in the ICS process to prevent the partner’s needs from being overlooked.

PIO - Public Information Officer provides information and access to news papers, television, etc... so that an accurate and consistent picture of the incident is available to the public, including evacuation plans.

Administration - Admin collects and collates daily information about the incident, including daily reports from other sections, how many fire fighters were at the incident, how much does the incident cost, how many acres are affected, etc... (the official book keeper for the incident).

Safety - Safety does just what the name implies.  This section chief has overall responsibility for the safe practices used by everyone assigned to the incident.  This includes enforcing breaks and rest periods, approving daily plans and investigating any accidents and injuries.

Planning Section Chief - The Planning Section Chief is tasked with the collection and display of incident information, primarily consisting of the status of all resources and overall status of the incident.

Each of these section Chiefs report directly to the IC.  Operations and Logistics do most of the planning for daily activities and coordination of resources.

For a more complete description see the link below.

Each Chief goes through extensive training that includes class room, simulated incidents and real incidents before they can serve as a Chief.  Almost all public safety officials also participate in some form of ICS training to prepare them for the "Big One" whether it is natural or manmade disaster.  However after 30 years in the Public Sector, I've seen the system fail because inadequate preparedness, most in training and simulations to insure coordination.  However it works a lot better now than when it was first instituted in the 1970's.
