  1. The quickest route is direct ~ by plane. They serve really good meals on board.

  2. From where in Alaska to where in California?

My drive from Anchorage to San Diego through Idaho was about 4000 miles...that's not "quick" no matter how you look at it.

Buy a copy of "The Milepost," it's worth the price and it will give you all sorts of hints about where to stop and where to stay on the way.

The first answer was "fly" and that's about right.  If you're leaving Anchorage, you have to drive north to TOK to pick up the Alaskan Highway...that's the first 300 miles...and then to stay on decent road, you'll have to drive through Canada's Yukon territory.  Tok to Whitehorse to Seattle is about 2000 miles...give or take...but Washington State is the nearest US entrance to Cali...so that's the way to go.

Seattle to Sacramento is just over 600 miles...and after that, I'm sure you'll find your way.

Where to eat on the drive?  Stop when you see anything interesting...a lot of those little stops have great pie, homemade icecream, fabulous soups, sandwiches, salads...it's scenic and there's not reason to rush.  Stay at the little places and B&Bs, avoid the bigger hotels...and don't forget to stop for gas at every available opportunity.

Doesn't hurt to carry clear plastic and duct tape with you as well as a spare or two in case you lose a windshield to a big rock...you won't have cellular service for most of the trip until close to the lower 48.

    Good luck!
