  1. You probably won't want to hear this, but I'd get it done by a professional instead.  I was once a blond and did the at-home thing...well, it turned jet black instead of the nice, rich brown on the box :-(  But, if you have education in that field, go for it!  I would recommend putting petroleum jelly around the hairline...it helps not to stain the skin (and also avoids the endless "scrubbing" to get it off once it's dried!)  Good luck!

  2. dont do it!! tell her to get it done proffesionally or youll regret it. unless youre like 13 and you dont care about your hair much

  3. If her hair has been bleached to yellow or pale yellow, you definitely do have to put the red back in, so ignore the person who said otherwise. Otherwise the hair will pick up the undertones of the haircolor, so if it's an ash based color, she'll have greenish hair.

There's a procedure for adding the red back in during a tintback -- you won't dye it red and then dye it brown. Call the 800 number (tonight! They won't be in on the weekend) of the haircolor maker and follow their instructions.

As a person above said, timing will be affected, because her hair will be very porous. It's been a while since I gave this kind of advice for my job, so I've forgotten the exact timing and suggested products for the tintback may have changed, so the advice hotline is your best bet.

Good luck! I hope it turns out the way she wants.

  4. Just follow the instructions, but just so you know the color isn't going to be the same as on the box. So don't be surprised by the results. I got orange hair last time I did that, and it was supposed to be light brown...

  5. you dont need to put red in it first. just pick out a color she would like and fallow the directions on the box

  6. Be sure to wear gloves, And if you have an old brush, use it. You can comb the dye in.  And do the bottom part of her hair first. Pin it up with a large hair clip or barette. And when you do the top, Be sure to start at the part ad roots.

    Good luck :]

  7. Bleach really sucks up color because the hair follicle is so dried out, so whatever color you're going to dye it, know that it will be really intense. Color also fades faster, so if only part of it is dyed, you will be able to tell within a couple of weeks what parts were blond and what parts were natural. Also, rub Vaseline around the scalp and ears to keep the hair dye from dyeing the skin. Good luck!

  8. I have a helpful hint.  I die my wife's hair all the time.  After the first few times we learned a trick because I was getting the die on her forehead and ears and neck.  Put conditioner on all of these parts so that when it comes time to rinse, the die that got on her skin will rinse away.
