im fourteen and i don't know what i want to be when i get older.

i know i'm going to college.

and i wanted to go and be a pediatrician but i don't want to do 8 years before actually starting a job that would mean about 30 years old when i start a family (i want to be 23 or 24+)

then i thought psycologist, or lawyer, or vet and those all take about 8-10 years.

can someone help me find a job that pays a lot and doesn't take 8-10 years of college?!

  1. Heiress.

Seriously, I'd be skeptical if you did know what you wanted to do with the rest of your life at age 14.  You're likely to change your mind many times before you finally pick a profession.

  2. OK...you need to think of what you're actually interested in sweetie. Doctors and lawyers are in different worlds!!! I think you are thinking way too much about salary.

If you find somethng you love, and do it really well, you could easily rise to the top and make as much money as a doctor or lawyer would. And you probably wouldn't work as many hours either.

    Take the career interest test.

  3. I was 24 and already a mother before I knew what I wanted to do. I decided on nursing since school is not all that long and it pays well. You still have plenty of time. Your ideas will change as you get older too.

  4. It's not at all unreasonable to not yet know what you want to do for the rest of your life at 14.  You've only been thinking about such things for a few years.  You can't possibly have enough information yet.

The best thing for you to do is to get lots of different kinds of experiences.  Doing community service is a great way to do that.  If you're interested in medicine, volunteer at a community free clinic or become a youth volunteer at a hospital.

Don't worry about the amount of training it takes; focus on what you're good at and would be willing to do every day.

Starting a family is in the same category.  You've got at least a decade to think about it.  Don't go making such big decisions with very little information.  Heck, you may get to 24 and discover you don't like small children!  (it could happen...)

  5. Many people don't know what they are going to do with the rest of their lives. There are many doctors, lawyers and other professionals in the world who are leaving their professions to chase their true dreams...as bakers, artist, musician etc.

For you honey, at 14, stay in school and take all the academic classes you can.Education is what is important to you at this age, actually at any age. Get involved in community service or sports. Stay active. Stay out of trouble. What you want to do and what you want to be are answers no one can answer with certainty.
