  1. eco earth - a coconut fiber substrate

play sand, mix it with water so that it is "sandcastle" consistancy (this way it will not collapse when they bury down in to it

there is also something called calci-sand that is good for them and pretty looking too

i personally have eco earth and sand in my tank..

driftwood, nets, plastic plants, hiding huts - they love to climb

one bowl for fresh water and one for salt (at least)

    fresh fruits and veggies

    humidity and temperature gauges

    extra shells

  2. -try to make more than one level if possible by using a large suction cup shower caddy filled with shells (so they have multiple options) also using a fishing net as a ladder

    - lots of driftwood toys

    - make part of it with moist play sand and a smaller part with a cypress mulch bedding (my hermies love it)

    - hermit crab safe plants (check out websites like www. thecrabbagepatch.com for ideas)

    - a large freshwater pool/ a medium- large salt water pool

  3. Congratulations on the new home for your hermit crabs.

Below are a couple of links with great ideas.

  4. I built a second floor.

Have a hard small base, like a square piece of wood or plastic. Hot clue it to something as a stand like the little building block cylinders made for kiddies. then if using a wood base, use a staple gun to staple a fish net or small basketball net as a ladder.

If your tank is big enough, (which it may not be as it is a long tank) you can not use the base idea but use a square bowl that you can fill with substrate, on the square if it is large enough you can even have a hide away on top.

Also try going to plenty of pet stores and buy some stuff to climb, hide in. Almost anything meant for reptiles or small animals like rodents can be used in a crabitat.

I use coral, cork bark, cholla wood, petrified wood, driftwood, grapevine, ceramic logs, ceramic pieces of wood, fake plants, fake plants attached to aquarium rock, flat pieces of bark, Coconut fiber climbing walls, rocks, coconuts, wicker baskets, large sponges, large shells that the crabs can't use for homes, large clay structures, hemp nets, lego structures, jungle plants, jungle vine, and all sorts of other things. Anything works really, Of course all this can't fit in my tank, I have a 25 gallon! Plus there is still room for a hideaway, food and water, shells and space. So I switch up the tank setup every week or so.

At night when they are moving, I'll move the hideaway to the other side of the tank or use a different one, I'll move the pants in the tank or in front of the hideaway, I'll put climbing objects on it side, or attach it on the wall via Velcro. I move the food and water dishes, and usually have the food dish in an open area as the crabs gather around it at night, I replace items, move items, add items, I be creative! Do whatever you think you should.

    Don't do this though

    AT THE PET STORE

Hey! look at that coconut hideaway! Its meant for hermit crabs! Yay! I'm gonna buy it!

    1. Plenty of things can be used for hermit crabs like ones meant for reptiles

    2. You can build a coconut hideaway.

Still that doesn't mean you shouldn't buy it, just keep your mind open.

Well this answer is really long so thats it good luck!
