Im getting a gerbil tomorrow!! Im so excited. I have done a ton of research although i have some questions. I know they are better off in pairs but im only getting one will it be fine on its own?

Do they carry them at petsmart, petco, pet fun? Somewhere in Illinois?

Where can i find a cage topper for a 10 gallon tank?

Thank you!!!! I need all the help I can get. Additional details and/or tips will work too!!

  1. yah the tank is fine, make sure they have a house, and something to chew i have had alot so trust me. buy some treats to put in your hand when you first try to get them like you. DO NOT PICK THEM UP AGAINST THEIR WILL WHEN YOU FIRST GET THEM do not bug them the first 3 days, then set your hand in the cage with a treat in it and then slowly start picking then up after 2 days of doing that, dont hold them too long at first. i hope this helped if you want to hear more e-mail me at lucylovesanimals@swbell.net

  2. Do NOT use a glass fish tank as a cage please!  They over heat very quickly as there is no air circulation.  A hamster or gerbil cage will put you back no more than $30 and is worth every penny.  It makes a world of difference.  Go sit in your car with one window open a tiny amount for 15 minutes and see how the gerbil will feel.  You'll be sweating bullets.

  3. You would probably be better off having two of the same s*x gerbils because i don't think you want gerbil babies running around! Pet-smart and Petco do carry these animals and anything you would need would be found here too, including the cage topper for a 10 gallon tank! Hope this helps! :)

  4. You should really get the tank set up BEFORE getting the gerbil. I would recommend you just get your supplies and tank tomorrow. Then, go back in a few days and get your gerbil.

Why are you not able to get two gerbils? Gerbils are social and should be kept in same s*x pairs. Lone gerbils tend to live shorter, less healthy lives. One may be more work than two gerbils, because you have to find more time to spend with it. No matter how much time you spend with a lone gerbil, though, it doesn't change the fact that the gerbil must sleep alone, groom itself, and play with itself when you're not around. Two gerbils are better than one.

Yes. Gerbils are, generally, carried at most pet stores. You'll probably find them at PetSmart and PetCo. I don't have a Pet Fun in my area, so I don't know, but they probably do.

You can find tank toppers in most pet stores. However, there's a difference between a good topper and a bad topper. In my opinion, bad toppers are the ones that have lots of plastic and plastic tubes. Plastic is a no-no for gerbils. Here are the toppers I've found and now suggest:

I, personally, have a topper from the first link and it's pretty great. The wire is a bit big for my gerbils feet, so I just put some cardboard and a grass mat down to give them a solid place to sit.

Gender is just a preference. Both males and females are great. Males tend to be larger, more laid back, and less territorial, whereas females tend to be smaller, more active, and more territorial. However, you could easily find an active male and laid back female. Both do well in pairs, assuming the cage is large enough to house them both comfortably. I have two females, and they adore each other.

If you have any other questions, feel free to e-mail me. I'd be glad to try and answer them for you.

  5. When you get to the pet store, ask for someone to help you out, and ask them all the questions you can think of! They will be more than happy to help you out!

Yes, they are better of in pairs, and you can get them at PetSmart. They aren't that expensive. PetSmart will have EVERYTHING you need for your new addition as well. A ten gallon tank topper shouldn't cost much either, I got on from a local pet store for around ten dollars, I do believe.

  6. one crappy pet

    i feel bad for u

  7. Petsmart does have them, and they have a tank topper too! Have fun with your new pet!

  8. PetSmart should have them. The gerbil will be fine as long as you play with it a lot! PetSmart should have everything you need for your gerbil!

I wouldn't recommend going to Petco! They have that whole back round of abusing and torturing their animals!

    Good luck!

  9. yes its ok if u just buy 1 but u have to give it more attention and play with it a lot !!

they carry REALLY healthy gerbils at petsmart

im srry but im not exactly sure where u can get a cage topper just ask someone at a pet store they should know

    my tips are:
