So what are the things that I absolutely need to survive. I have put some stuff on layaway! But I am organized and I want to write every freaking thing down! So help me out! And this is for people that have had their own place, and have experienced it all. No little teenagers respond to this question please.

  1. You only need the basics for simple survival -  one would be surprised at how little we actually need. There's the obvious, of course, like bed, towels, sheets, dishes, etc.  But also think of flashlight & candles (for power outages) write down all your contact numbers for utilities so you can easily get them set up, cleaning supplies (incl dish soap, sponges, mop, broom, toilet brush), a spare key (leave with parents or trusted friend in case of lock out). Will you need window coverings?  What about a door mat for outside so you can wipe your feet as you enter?  Vaccuum.  Um...if I think of more, I'll add them later...Good luck and enjoy your first apartment!

Oh yeah, a few basic tools might help  - tape measure, screwdrivers or power screwdriver is even better, hammer.  Just for things like hanging pictures, or putting together furniture.

  2. this http://www.heftybigbags.com helps to maximize closet space because it allows you to use the closet floor without major fear of grime/dust

  3. Kitchen stuff is always good to have first and garbage cans, things like furniture can usually wait (you find a lot of uses for Rubbermaid totes and coolers) although a bed is always nice... I found the best thing to do when moving into a new place is to get your bedroom set up first... That way, when the rest of the place is a disaster from moving, you'll have a calm place to escape to...
